femslash february #20: rose/mylène (quest)
steampunk fantasy setting. mylène is an adventurer, someone who sails out to distant places on her airship to capture thieves or find lost belongings. she's not very brave, however, and frets about every quest.
that's why it's helpful for her to have rose as her supply agent and occasional quest giver. rose is incredibly optimistic and amazingly cheerful, and whenever mylène comes in to get supplies rose always asks for a full explanation and then listens attentively throughout, before giving mylène some kind of inspiring speech at the end. the speeches always help, and so do the heart-shaped cookies that rose often bakes and adds on top of the rations - something mylène assumes rose must do for everyone, but she does feel her own heart jump with a tiny bit of hope whenever she eats one. what if, she thinks - what if. but because she could never ask rose for encouragement in asking rose out, she never has the guts to.
one day, though, rose gives her a new quest. "i need a bouquet of red roses picked from the abandoned gardens near ramier," she says. "there are feral pigeons, but i know you can handle them, miss haprèle. i also want you to find a pair of golden rings in the lovers' mausoleum at glacier. it might sound scary, but i believe in you!" mylène does think it sounds scary to meet feral pigeons and delve into a crypt, but rose's warm smile is enough to convince her to do it. she goes out, picks the flowers, retrieves the rings, and she doesn't even think it's all that scary. then she returns to rose's shop with the items.
when she hands them over, though, rose tells her to keep one ring for herself. "you will need it for your next quest," she says.
"is it magical?" asks mylène, who's sensed nothing particular from it.
"in a way," rose replies, a wily smile on her lips. "do you accept my next quest?"
"i do," nods mylène. "what is it?"
"your quest is to get married to me this saturday. come, let's visit the tailor marinette so we can get our dresses sorted."
