i have finally compiled my thoughts on the tadc drama. i think that the arguments from both sides are a fair bit overblown, so i'm here to share my opinion on the entire thing. bit of a warning for semi unhinged ranting though at the end
i think that when analyzing drama like this, it's important to remember Hanlon's razor. "Never attribute to malice that which can equally be attributed to stupidity". i think that a fair bit of stupidity has been percieved as malice by people on the internet in regards to this show. for instance, the argument that the show gives too little focus to the female characters is mostly true, but instead of intentional malice, i think the show suffers from gooseworx's blatant favoritism of Jax. Giving him extra focus over pomni, gangle, and especially ragatha seems more like goose letting her preference into the writing rather than the writers being misogynist. The real-life racism of some of the cast members I have not researched extensively, but at least for the the jackbox game thing i can say that this seems more like a stupid, bad taste joke than them actually trying to be racist. also, in that specific instance, the harm caused by the joke was negligable, so i think that the amount of focus it's getting is a bit much. there is plenty of criticism that can be applied to the cast and to gooseworx based on her past statements and how generally unprofessional she acts, but i think that the jackbox thing gets a bit too much focus. continuing on, the degree to which people were up in arms about the leaks was completely ridiculous. no, we do not need to burn the leakers at the stake, and no, it isn't gooseworx's fault personally that the leaks happened. the leaks happening were entirely on Glitch and whoever was distributing the show in Brazil, and leaks of shows happen all of the time. despite their obvious flaws, i honestly kinda feel bad for the people working on the show, because they did not sign up to become arguably the biggest internet show and go through idol worship and then intense scrutiny. i hope that both the fans and the creators learn from this and that all of the people who just hopped on the bandwagon to amplify the drama find a better place in life. i honestly don't understand why independent creators are held to such a high standard compared to companies. i bet there would be no obsessive and vitriolic discourse if a netflix show gave too much attention to one male character or if nintendo had a concert that didn't play in south america even though these companies have way more resources to make it happen. a lot of this internet discourse really frustrates me because instead of beating up on some person who made a mediocre piece of media and was an asshole a few times or beating up on people criticizing that person we could be going against actually terrible people who are in charge of pretty much every influential body in the world. there are people being fucked over and killed en masse by companies and leaders and we are spending our time arguing about whether this person who made an okay tv show is racist or not.
