#mycomicinfluences #2 Goodwin & Simonson’s - “Manhunter” It was a few years after the fact, when I 1st discovered the original run of Manhunter - the 7-part, 8 page back-up series in DC’s Detective Comics. Somewhere between 1977 and ’79 I got a hold of a beat-up copy of the last installment, the lead story wrap up entitled “GOTTERDAMMERUNG!” I saw what was considered some of Walt Simonson’s “early” work. And it was awesome, he was/is another constant influence on my art style. Archie Goodwin’s story was a spy thriller/revenge/redemption masterpiece - worthy of any James Bond movie adventure I’d experienced up to that point. Simonson’s dynamic and graphic illustrations and page designs were inspiring to say the least, these particular pages here are a few of my favorites - the Dr. Mykros helmet page, and the Cathedral Perilous sequence with the kid. They directly influenced my page designs a couple years later on a story named “Tutt”. Didn’t get to experience the whole Manhunter story until I picked up the B&W GN release by Excaliber. So when the Full size Artist’s Edition was released recently I jumped on it. This little 7 part epic won numerous awards at the time, from the Academy of Comic Book Arts, that included 2 “Best Writer” awards [73/74] for Archie Goodwin, “Outstanding New Talent” [1973] for Walt Simonson and Best Feature Length Story [1974] for Gotterdammerung! Still one of my all-time favorite series and it’s stood the test of time. #mycomicinfluences #1 "Captain Canuck" First released by Comely Comics in 1975, by Richard Comely and Ron Leishman, went on hiatus after 3 issues only to return in 1979 under the CKR banner with the addition of artists George Freeman and Jean Claude St. Aubin. I discovered the book in 1980, it was my 1st experience with a book solely produced outside the U.S. with characters, creators and stories centered elsewhere. Fell in love with Freeman's art at first sight. It wasn't easy getting these books back then but I managed to find most of the current issues as they were released and sent for back issues directly from CKR. It was well done with interesting characters and stories and of course I thought the art was great. They stopped production after issue #14. The character has returned a couple times after this initial version, as recently as 2015 in an ongoing series, which was pretty good.
