— Mai boarded the Stratospheric at age 11, and was trained as the assistant to the ship's psychiatrist. After her death, he discovered a passion for mycology and botany. This passion developed into a love of the outdoors and exploring when the ship lands on Vertumna. After the crash landing of the Heliopause, he takes a job in Command to keep an eye on Lum and ends up bonding with the other people there who have a distaste for the new governor
