The truth is, Sonic wasn't perfect. He knew that about himself, and he only ever did what he felt was what he needed to do. Once upon a time, Sonic thought he needed to help his former friend, the same way Solaris helped him as a grieving child. But that former friend has manipulated his emotions at every turn, and refuses to change no matter how many olive branches had been extended to him. And what did Sonic ever get out of it? More lives lost on his name? More guilt?
The worrisome part is Mephiles can likely see the moment he hesitates. Leaving the beaten and broken god here to perish, within another endless void. Is this another trick to manipulate his emotions? Does Sonic even care at this point if it is?
β It's what you want. β The speedster reminds, gesturing to the crumbling sky and sinking floor. One way or another, Mephiles will end up like this. There is nothing Sonic can do to change that. Only who all goes with him... And as we already know, they're both opportunists.
So the hedgehog turned away from his helpless former friend, and without another word he took off running to the nearest portal home he could find.
