I hope no one kills me for putting this on the internet, but it’s been eating me alive for a while.
The seed of the idea that became the east window was rooted in an experience I had at work, which sent me on a crazy spiral.
Details below the cut. Tw for self harm and suicidal thoughts
So basically, most jobs in my field require a security or police check. I had to do my first one when I was very young, think not too far out of high school. One of the questions I was asked in the thing was if I’ve ever had mental health issues or hurt myself or considered ending my life. The answer to all 3 was yes, but I lied and said no.
I was so scared because my whole entire life, since I was a teenager and my parents found out, I’ve been told to never breathe a word of it to a soul. They have it ingrained in them that if anyone knows that you’ve so much as had a run in with depression, you’ll never ever get hired. This belief was conditioned into me so when they asked, I said no.
After that, I found out it’s a criminal offence to lie.
I considered coming clean and facing the consequences, but chickened out because I was scared of going to jail. My parents were furious that I even considered it and said some choice words to me. During this time, I thought of every possibility.
If my coworkers accidentally saw my scars, I could go to jail.
If I accidentally told a friend I’d self harmed, I could go to jail.
If I even mentioned it online, I could go to jail.
My only other option was to lie for my whole life.
But that would spiral out of control, because if I ever got into a relationship, I’d either have to hide it from the person (impossible) or ask them to lie for me (also impossible).
I know that going to jail might be very unlikely, but remember how young I was. I was so scared that I concluded the only way to prevent going to jail or facing a lifetime of lying and hiding was to kill myself.
I think I spent months crying almost every day, having panic attacks and planning out all sorts of endings. I only stayed alive because of my younger sibling. I couldn’t do that to them when they had exams. Anyway, since I’m still here, obviously I didn’t kill myself.
I left that job and moved on, and am slowly coming to terms with the reality that maybe one day I will get in trouble.
But it was during this time that my only comfort became imagining what would happen to either Jim or Spock if they were in the same situation. Imagine if Sarek pulled some strings to get Spock into starfleet despite a history of mental illness and self harm? What would happen if people discovered this? What about if Jim started hurting himself after Tarsus IV? Or the Farragut?
I wanted to think of what would happen if they lost the careers they worked so hard for because I was scared that would happen to me. I needed to know that there was another option—that even if I lost everything, I wouldn’t have to die.
The reason I chose Spock was because Vulcan culture of being emotionless and strong and upholding your family’s reputation is so similar to my culture. Spock’s relationship with his parents is strained, and he struggles to fit in everywhere but on the Enterprise. He was also bullied as a kid and all of this combined to make him so relatable to me. I could imagine that if Spock was in this situation, he would try to logic his way out like me, but end up at the same crossroads: either lose your career or die.
DS9 spoiler below:
A side point is that this is why Bashir’s story in DS9 hit me so hard. I actually reached that point of the show while I was going through the worst of the issues. The way his parents forced genetic engineering on him and then forced him to keep it a secret made me think of how mine forced me to keep my self harm a secret. And then his terror of being discovered and kicked out of starfleet just hit home. I was both happy and sad when he was eventually granted an exemption. On the one hand it showed me that people were more accepting than one might assume, but on the other, that this was ultimately fictional, and real life is never so simple.
Anyway, I’m still here, still alive, and now I’m turning that trauma into a fic.
If you’ve read all the way down to here, thank you.
