Coup police of Maldives dismantle pro-democracy protest zone over alleged black magic use
May 29, 2012 Police clash with pro-democracy protesters (who demand for early elections in the Maldives) and dismantled areas designated for peaceful assembly. The democratically elected government of Maldives was overthrown by a coup with the help of police and military on Feb 7 since then there have been many attempts at suppressing freedom of expression and association. The raid was initiated by ultra-radical Islamist party, Adhaalath (Islamists who came to power with coup), who accused pro-democracy protesters of being involved in black magic and giving out free condoms in the demonstration area. Adhaalath wants to ban the use of condoms in Maldives, and bring capital punishment to those they accuse of performing black magic.
