This is another great band playing at Capital Garage, a venue I used to love before it moved and became bougie. The video quality is absolutely shit but I don't care because I have the memories, at least for now. 

Sheltering in place has me more nostalgic than typical. I spent a couple hours the other day looking up old footage from shows I've been to (or likely have been to), frequented venues, and bands I would listen to from way back. I came across this which is great. Not the video quality, but the fact that this exists. It was filmed at the original Capital Garage, which was one of the few places that had good 18 and under shows. Then it moved and got shitty and stopped caring about the music. Back to Hella. Their live performances were always energetic, a mix of intensity and lightheartedness. I would usually see this girl at their shows. My friends and I referred to her as dancer girl. She would stretch before their set and just go fucking nuts when they played. It was disappointing when we went to a show and she wasn't there. Fucking great times.

The movie Annihilation is one of my favorites. Especially that bear!  The ending wouldn't be the same without this song.  

I decided to read the book recently.  I relate too much to the main character in the book. 

I only slept less than 4 hours and I'm trying to get this energy going.

Today I needed a gentle memory, so Edelweiss. Like many others, I loved this movie when I was little. What I am most fond of with this song, however, is that my mom used to play it to wake me up when I was little. Like 4-5 years old little. (I still have the record she played, which is a cherished possession.) Even back then I was not a morning person and I would be angry that she had the audacity to try and get me out of my comfortable sleep and away from my comfortable bed. She somehow got the idea to play this song on our record player to coax me awake. The volume would start soft and low, just loud enough to assimilate into my dreams. Then louder and louder until I finally woke up. I would lay in the dark listening until the song ended. Mornings were much easier for us all after that. It was a small but influential gesture. A peace offering in daybreak war times.

For several years now I would hum this song to myself and I had no idea where it came from or where I heard it. Then I was watching Kill Bill last night and, lo and behold, Elle Driver is whistling it as she is walking down the hospital hallway. Its funny how things creep into your memory without conscious reinforcement.

I'm in Canada for the first time today and drive past East Hastings, so naturally I think of this song.
