In search of the man with the red beard... so who was Alfred Bruyas? On coming down a staircase in a museum and seeing a portrait of a dandified gentleman with a shock of auburn hair, my first thought was how familiar he seemed... It’s an odd reaction to a nineteenth-century painting I have never knowingly seen before, in a French regional museum I have never visited before (the Musée Fabre in Montpellier), but as I walked through the galleries, I saw yet another portrait of a familiar man with a ginger beard, and another, and another. Soon on reading the labels I realised that they were all donated by the same man - a collector called Alfred Bruyas (1821-1876). I became more and more interested in this man I knew nothing about. Why so many portraits, by so many seriously good artists? And as I turned the corner into a gallery full of paintings by Gustave Courbet it all made sense. Hanging there was that iconic, and wonderful, portrait ‘Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet’ - at the centre of which stands Alfred Bruyas with his arms outstretched. That’s why I recognised him! The painting I knew so well from reproduction in art history books as a student. It turns out that Bruyas, who was the son of a banker, had amassed an important collection of the work of his contemporaries including Courbet, Eugène Delacroix, Thomas Couture, Theodore Rousseau, and many others, including more than 30 portraits. Amongst those that depict him in his study, or in the studios of artists, are some fascinating paintings, such as a head of Christ wearing the crown of thorns which is clearly modelled on Bruyas. What an extraordinary patron - why is there not more information about him out there?
