I approached the cage nervously, taking cautious steps towards the heavy steel bars. The keys rattled as my hands shook with apparent fear as I grew ever closer to the lock.
“B-Blue?” I called out quietly, eyes never leaving the crouching figure huddled in the far corner of the cell. There was no reply. Guilt began to rot at me as I took in the ragged form across the way. Clearing my throat, I steeled my nerves and repeated myself, “Blue?”
Again, only silence filled the air and, taking a steadying breath, I reached out and inserted the correct key into the lock. I was just about to turn my wrist when suddenly, the figure was in front of me.
A hand snapped out from between the bars and strong fingers circled threateningly around my throat.
“YOU JUST THOUGHT YOU COULD IGNORE ME?!” She spat, her voice hoarse from all the shouting she had no doubt been doing as of late. “YOU JUST LEFT ME HERE! LOCKED AWAY LIKE SOME BEAST!”
“I-I couldn’t help it!” I managed to rasp out, the muscles in her hand constricting and only squeezing harder. “It-It was study week! I had a lot of big projects to finish!”
“You think I give a fuck about that?” She growled, eyes blazing from their place behind the bars.
I managed a weak shake of my head.
“It’s good you know that.” Her other hand reached through the bars, pulling at the front of my shirt and yanking me closer to the bars. The metal was cold against the skin of my cheek. The hand disappeared from around my throat, allowing precious air to flow once more into my lungs.
“I was going to let you out!” I rasped, my own eyes holding her own, noticing the quiet fire that lingered in their azure depths. “But, you know I couldn’t do it yet. I had previous engagements.” The hold she had on me slackened slightly, “I have a job and homework for classes that I pay for...” I tried in an attempt to appeal to her reasonable side. “People love you and your work, Blue. But the horrible truth is, you don’t get paid for doing so.”
And suddenly, her hands were gone from me entirely.
I fell to the ground, completely off-balanced and looked up to find that she was back near the corner where she had been before. Her posture was what gave it away then: the defeat after listening to my words.
“You don’t think I know that?” She said quietly, her tone wholly different than what it had been before. It was so soft now, so broken. “That I’m the one who comes second to all else...”
When she raised her head from where it had been bowed, her eyes were glassy with unshed tears.
“You can’t just ignore me, though, like you’ve been doing.” She sniffed, turning back slightly so that she could hold my gaze, “Please, I’m going to die in here.”
“Oh... no...” I climbed to my feet, my own eyes sympathetic. “No, Blue. You’re not going to die. I’m here to save you.” Stepping up to the bars of the cage once more, I laid my hand upon the cool metal. “I’m going to let you out-”
Her head snapped towards me with hope and she opened her mouth to speak.
The words seemed to die on her lips and the hope that was in her eyes diminished greatly as her heart sank.
“I can’t... You have to understand that it’s finals week next week.” I explained and her nose wrinkled slightly in disgust as she turned away once more. “But, you can have tonight and the next few days to do as you please. Just... remember to keep it down.”
The lock clicked as I turned the key and the hinges groaned as I pulled the door open.
“Just one more week...” I told her as she took a few, cautious steps closer, “And then, you’ll be free for months.”
I didn’t turn back as I walked away from the cage, aware of the eyes upon me and I knew that this next week was going to be impossible for the both of us.
