Silence settled over them; she had always tried to shield herself and her past behind a hardened wall of apathy from everyone she encountered on the sea. She was a survivor betraying her morals to release her precious village from the grips of a monster. She had to be strong, using lies, deception, and attacking the world by stratagem. How could she bring herself to tell him the depths of her soul? Was her sorrow that palpable? They were questions that she did not really want to discover the answers to. For a moment, all she could do was stare into her cup, a forced smile spreading across her features.

❝ Sorrow huh? ❞ She inquired after a moment, bitter laughter accompanying her words. Her defense told her to ask him what he knew of sorrow, yet she couldn't bring herself to. She knew that this ship and these people were merely a means to an end so that she could find a bounty to bring back home, and it did not matter to her that she was no longer welcome in her village. She would be the villain in their story time and time again if it meant that nobody else had to die — nobody else would have to suffer.

It felt like an eternity before she could finally gaze at him. ❝ I guess it's because I've lost a lot of money since meeting you guys. I mean, honestly, how much food do you two really need? ❞ She inquired, waving her hand about in a joking manner. It would be easier to lie than to burden him and the crew with her story. Despite everything, there was part of her that wished she could tell him; she wished she could bare her soul to him because her world was lonely. It was a lonely path she walked with no hope of redemption.

todd whips their head around, and stares with a gaping mouth, " what do you MEAN i failed you? " their eyes narrow, trying to see if he's being serious, " are you out of your mind !? "

there's grumbling of shock and surprise, how dare they talk to their king like that, as sweeney becomes aware of the fact he's semi serious, and displays not a single ounce of fear. their face contorts with disbelief, before a hand slaps against their forehead, and drags their face down, with a roll of their eyes. there's a red tint of anger, and annoyance to their face.

" O O O O O-kay, you big dramatic baby, it's just a nic, it's not even bleeding that much, " they slaps the handkerchief into his hand, saying the most they've ever said in front of his underlings, but he done pissed them off. " i'll get my ointment, but, this wouldn't happen if you weren't ten feet tall and i didn't have to get on a ladder to service you. seems like that's a your problem. "

" oh brulee, ah, if you are looking for katakuri, he just left for his merienda if you are looking for him. " ahmya says the word merienda with a tinge of disappointment that she wasn't joining him, " i can let him know you were here ?"

he can practically feel his lungs being deprived of oxygen, the hearty laughter that spilled from sharp toothed maw being too much for the helmsman to contain. life out at sea in this age was dangerous, death looming around every corner and wave that crashed on the ocean; he'd experienced it first hand. but to be able to relax with his newfound crew like this, in between the battles that plagued each of their individual dreams and ambitions ? it truly felt like they were a family.

" ahhh, neither have i. it feels like such a weight off my shoulders, " his voice finally manages to break through the fits of laughter that echoed throughout the ship's deck. and jinbei knew that it was a weight off his captain's shoulders as well, having witnessed the pain and emotional scaring that the young man had endured in this world. it was why these small moments counted so much, a chance for them to recuperate and rebuild.

" then let's make sure it's a regular occurance, hm ? " single webbed hand comes to pat against the other's shoulder in a protective manner, the soft concern present within his tone. this boy had been through too much, and it was now jinbei's role to upkeep that familiar smile that the world gazed at everyday.

" haha, that was great, man i really thought i was gonna die this time, " came an elated tone from the pirate, smile wide as he briefly stretches. the amount of near death experiences he'd endured whilst being a part of this chaotic crew, there was far too many to count, yet despite them being a regular experience, it didn't make them any less enjoyable. but it was over now, and they could laugh about it, at least momentarily.

usopp was quick to notice the way his captain was staring him down, slight bead of sweat trickling upon his face. oh god, he knew that look all too well, quickly coming on the defensive. " hey hey, i'm fine. i came off quite lucky there, " voice came proudly for a moment, laugh following after but quickly stopped thanks to the sharp sting and a wince from his ribcage.

and what was he doing in that given moment ?   not relaxing completely,  this life at sea was far too dangerous to ever let one’s guard down.   but for the time being,  law was cleaning up his equipment,  sorting them into their correct drawers,  sections,  making sure each of them weren’t broken or needed to be replaced.   and that’s when as he was looking for a very specific piece of equipment,  it was handed to him from behind via a very familiar figure.

“ ah,  thanks dad, ”   the words slip out from under his tongue,  taking said item into his fingertips,  pausing in the middle of placing it upon his desk with a shocked expression shifting against his face.  wait,  he didn’t just say what he thought he said ...
