Bifocal, and multi-focal contact lenses, are designed to address vision disorders associated with refractive errors, and age related disorders, such as presbyopia. Depending on the design of the lens, various bifocal, and multi-focal contact lenses, will work different. The designs fall into two basic groups, simultaneous, and segmented designs. Simultaneous vision designs.
These lenses have specific regions designated for far and near viewing. There are two types of simultaneous vision designs: concentric and aspheric Concentric multi-focal contact lenses. This design has a primary viewing area in the center of the lens, and is surrounded by concentric rings of near, and distance powers. The central viewing zone is usually for viewing distant objects.
Aspheric multi-focal contact lenses Unlike concentric multi-focal lenses, this design gradually changes lens powers from distance to near, or vice versa, as it moves away from the center of the lens. The second group of designs are called, Segmented designs. This design is similar to bifocal eyeglasses; where the lower portion of the lens allows for near viewing of objects, and the rest of the lens is used for viewing distant objects. When wearing bifocal, or multi-focal lenses, a person is able to see near, or distant objects, by simply moving their eyes to look through the respective regions of the lenses.
