Sightings - S3E05 - “Crop Circles” - October 9th, 1994

“Crop circles are generally associated with the fields and grasslands of Great Britain. The formations discovered outside the British isles have almost all been ruled out as hoaxes. But in the past year an intriguing new series of crop circles is being studied along the US - Canadian border.”

In which we visit crop circles in Oregon and Washington, before focusing in on one near Windsor, Ontario: one whose creation was said to be accompanied by panic among animals and the appearance of amber lights in the night. Or as some witnesses say:

“The straw was just bent, laid over, right from the ground. The stalk was still one long piece of straw but it was just tipped, lying right flat on the ground.”

“I find it hard to believe that a human being could really go in dere and do that without disturbing any straw.”

That horses refused to ride past the crop circle.

Ilyes returns! From like two episodes ago because they're doing so many crop circle segments.

“There are certain features that you can develop an eye for and if you keep an open mind and not coming in with an expectation of finding this or not finding, if you stay open you’ll find all sorts of things, the clues are all over it.”

What's her theory?

"I believe that the circlemakers are non-terrestrial entities and likely non-physical...entities who do not need UFOs.”

A fellow investigator, meanwhile, speaks about how we're being "told something" by crop circles.

W.C. Levengood was a biophysicist who studied potential biological and chemical changes within the crops flattened by crop circles. Here, he claims that not only has the structure changed, but that the wheat becomes magnetized...

...Levengood did publish his findings in real scientific journals, but his methods were questioned.

And another scientist offers an explanation:

“We have an enormous amount of evidence that the causes of crop circle formations are ion plasma vortices.”

...

That's a less credible explanation than aliens! How can random weather phenomena create elaborate symmetrical patterns? But it seems this was actually a popular explanation for a bit; Wikipedia informs me that even Stephen Hawking said crop circles were either hoaxes or vortexes in the air?

"All scientists I think have a love of the unknown, of the mystery of the unknown, and there is a beauty in crop formations as well that is rather compelling," Burke says.

The head of MUFON Canada, meanwhile, does not hedge his bets, saying there's a "definite" UFO connection. And a psychic connection as well.

Witness stated," Hello . This object, which is clear in the video, was observed at exactly 11:30 PM in Dezful city, Khuzestan province, Iran. I have two other witnesses.About the few encounters I had with these objects, I can say that I always felt that the object was aware of my existence and as soon as I wanted to film it, it moved and left. I reported these encounters to the air force base of my country, which is located in our city, they just listened to me and hung up."

The investigator states, "It is possible this is a military training exercise, perhaps featuring a helicopter or similar vehicle, though it is one that this investigator has not seen, granted we are dealing with Iran, a secretive country with a relatively antiquated Air Force, whose habits could be quite dissimilar from our own, as well as the habits of our allies. Defaulting here to the disposition of Unknown/Other, as I cannot identify this craft/collection of lights, and there is limited information available to the American public concerning the training exercises of the Iranian military. As the witness says in her responses to my questions, it seems these triangular craft are spotted quite frequently above Iran, and she speculates that their Air Force is aware of their presence (or perhaps affiliated with it).
