Or, actually, a book that will become a movie. In a few weeks. 

Andy Weir’s The Martian is coming out later in October starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain and Bucky Barnes Sebastian Stan. I’ve been meaning to read this book for a while, but only got around to it last week, when I finally had the patience to sit down and finish the goddamn thing.

It’s about astronaut Mark Watney who gets stranded in Mars after his crew is hit with a massive storm and thinks he’s dead. The book is told from many different perspectives, like Watney’s log while in Mars, what’s happening down on Earth with his rescue missions and the rest of the crew coping with the fact that they “abandoned” one of their members in another planet.

There’s also this super creepy third-person sort of voiceover that brings the bad news and tells you stuff no one knows about yet. It’s interesting. But also... creepy.

I’m happy to say I really liked it. It actually surpassed all my expectations. It’s really heavy in the science part, to be honest, and it went over my head most of the time (really, it’s extremely detailed) but other than that the story is very nice. I tip my hat off to Weir, this must have taken a lot of research to achieve. It’s impressive. Of house I can’t check the science to see if it was correct, but it sounded very scienc-y.

(Side note: if you’re bothered by things getting over your head, this book is not for you. Unless you’re a specialist in astrophysics, botany, and other complicated space stuff, stuff will definitely get over your head.)

(Though if you really are a specialist in all those things, when do you even sleep?)

I’m really excited about this coming out as a movie. It’s one of those books that you just know will be awesome on screen. And it looks awesome from the trailers and stills that have been released. Hollywood would be really missing out if they didn’t adapt this movie.
