so here’s my thoughts on #1: slint-spiderland 

when I first saw this album, and heard about it, how it was revolutionary and experimental, i got fucking hype. because it was called pet sounds! so that means that theres gonna be animal noises in it! that’s so cool and experimental! and I open it up on spotify and i see the album cover and its the beach boys hanging out with goats. and I’m like holy crap those goats are gonna be in the album!!! like they’re not really pets, like, traditionally but they’re gonna be here and make noise and stuff!!!! nice!!!!!

NO!!!

THERE’S NOT A SINGLE ANIMAL NOISE IN THIS ENTIRE ALBUM!!! IT’S JUST THE SAME SONG LIKE 8 TIMES. there’s not a single meow or moo or bark or ribbit in the whole fucking thing!! the album isn’t evne about animals at all!! and you might be like “oh but maybe thats too much to include in a song” WELL THE THING IS THAT THE BEACH BOYS ALREADY KIND OF DID IT!! 

they have a song named “vega-tables”. you wouldn’t really expect there to be any vegetable related sounds in just one song named vega-tables. but you know what, there is. paul mccartney is credited for chewing celery. and its very loud and disgusting and honestly ruins the entire song. so clearly they had the like, idea to incorporate non-traditional sounds and were able to get a beatle to produce said sounds yet they couldn’t do it for an entire ALBUM named PET SOUNDS???????? 

I had a weird indie phase in middle school, so I was already familiar with neutral milk hotel. I had some songs off of this album, but that was back when you had to manually download shit so the only ones I had was holland 1945 and two headed boy
