#throwbackthursday, and a fitting one from several years ago, since it’s Antero season now: 🗻😱 Near the top of Mt. Antero, on one of the Cardwell family's claims with Steve Howse. (Note: ALWAYS rockhound with permission! Claim jumping and mineral trespass are illegal, and carry steep fines and worse.) Keith is hard-rock mining, on an outcropping with exposed pegmatite rock. Here on Antero, this requires breaking apart rotten granite and huge layers of ice, to expose the pegmatite minerals within. In this case, we were mining beautiful smoky quartz and microcline crystals! Though we were just there to help the Cardwells, and didn't take any of our finds, it was awesome to pull crystals out that hadn't been exposed for millions of years. (Karma likes the hike, but doesn't get excited about digging for rocks. ⛰ Wild and free, on the slopes of Mt. Antero. This beautiful bighorn ewe was high above the rest of the herd, probably acting as lookout while the others grazed.
