Malia knew it— the whole class knew it— Stephanie was one of the best (if not the best) witches of their freshmen class. Even as they were being newly introduced, she was capable of conjuring spells in class with impressive ease. Without a doubt in her mind, Malia was jealous. But even more than that, she was in awe of the older’s talent as she aspired to be at that level. 

Soon, the semester would be coming to an end. Caught up in this thought, Malia drummed her fingers impatiently against her desk as she waited for the last few minutes of the Defense Against the Dark Arts class to pass. Once it did, and they were finally excused, the younger jumped up from her seat, hurrying to greet Stephanie before she was lost in the sea of students exiting into the hallway. 

Starting with a simple bow, Malia took a moment to catch her breath before introducing herself. “Hi, I’m Malia! We’ve been in the same class for the last semester and you’re really good, so I was wondering if you would be interested in tutoring me a little, maybe? I don’t want to take up too much of your time, so I’d be willing to work around whenever would be most convenient for you.”

the shift in the season always catches barom off guard. sure, the temperature plummets overnight and he wakes up to oranges and reds instead of a sea of green — but it’s still always an afterthought. exam season at mokseong was always a time barom spends best ignoring his surroundings and life, period. as the figurative sand from the hourglass of his time as an undergraduate mokseong student gradually dissipates, seemingly, so does his recollection of the past. 

but: the beauty of an hourglass is that it’s so easy to reverse and restart.

he’s been staring at a computer for what feels like decades; except when barom actually looks at the time, only a little over three hours have passed. his ass is sore from the plastic chair he’s been confined to in the library, and there’s nothing more that the boy could want right now more than a goddamn cheeseburger following the audible growl from his stomach. people come and go — lucky them — but barom had been far too invested in own word to really pull himself out of his thoughts to notice those around him.

barom comes to the conclusion that his brain is officially fried for the moment being. he sighs, leaning back in his chair to crack his spine. he gives it a good pop as his eyes subtly wander to those working beside him out of curiosity.

there had been a female seated to his left for quite awhile, though barom didn’t bother to really invest in what she’d been working on. from his peripheral he can see her scroll up and down through word. he didn’t want to blatantly watch what she was doing — that’d be rude — so he sneaks just a quick glance instead.

she was the relentless, totally unauthorised, sometimes annoying, self-proclaimed manager of the suseong quidditch team. as a senior prefect, selene feels as though it is one of her responsibilities to keep track of how they are fairing and tries as much as she can to be a source of encouragement. while she finds that the team is generally motivated and seem to genuinely love what they do, she supposes a little shower of cheer here and there would do no harm.

boot clad feet made its way towards the quidditch field; vigilant of any flying quaffles that might be accidentally hurled towards her way. it was always a breath of fresh air coming out here. literally and figuratively. moments when she feels cooped up inside the castle, spending an ungodly amount of time between the hospital wing and the library, makes her wish she was talented in other fields too. perhaps all that physical activity would be good for her. except she despises flying and does not possess the nimble skills required for any other sport.

oh well, being a plain old student has its charm too.

in her periphery, she catches sight of the person she was waiting for. immediately, selene perks up—all thoughts from a second ago knocked out of the park. “stephanie!” raising an arm, she waves it around to catch the female’s attention. completely unnecessary because it was not like any other person was waiting for her but then again, you never know. walking closer, she smiles at the people she passes before stopping in front of the older female. “hey! how did it go?” there’s a hopeful look that passes across her features, a silent, please, please, please.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? let me paint you a picture: figure clad in black, wednesday seon stands to be possibly intimidating (despite the doll eyes and sweetheart flush) for once. though, that might be the black butterfly knife she’s flipping around like a psychotic killer on the prowl for the hunt of the night. which, she’s finding now, is just as well as a stay the fuck away from me as a giant set of snares attached to her chest. 

so maybe she should be rethinking this marching band thing in general.

                           whatever. NOT the point. what is the point you ask? 

well, it’s—this. it’s clad in black from head to toe wednesday and this mutt that rammed into her out of nowhere. it’s this mutt being seemingly stuck to her side despite all and any efforts to pull her off. it’s the fact that she knocked the butterfly knife clean out of her hand and onto the floor (or what? you would’ve used it on her? FUCK. MAYBE? GET. IT. OFF!@).

                           really. who the fuck brings a dog to a party anyway? 

well, for starters, it’s not a dog. wednesday knows this well (mind you, she’s not a fucking idiot). can tell by the size and general grabbiness of the furry beast that it’s more or less a child. which, begs an even bigger question: who the FUCK brings a kid to a college party?

“HEY—FOCUS!” she hisses, grabbing a handful of fur(?) and tugging. it’s easy to see she’s already agitated (easier, if you know her and know what she’s about—knows exactly how little it takes to set wednesday off), growing more and more heated by the minute. wednesday feels as if her chest is on fire, as if she’s swallowed a mouthful of pepperup potion and was seconds away from shooting steam out of her ears. as if she’s seconds away from kicking someone’s child into the moon. i mean, fuck, if it was a child that was cared for—it wouldn’t be running around by itself anyway. sticking itself onto perfectly fine strangers minding their own damn business—GODDAMNIT—

“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS—” the toseong yanks at the fur with all her might, features contorted into something ugly, veela temper running hot through her veins. whatever it was, it doesn’t seem as if she’s able to separate them. which, only leaves what? what is she to do now? cut this kid out of their costume? actually? tempting.

        “YAH!!! STOP FUCKING LAUGHING—WHERE THE HELL IS YOUR MOM??”

confusion is probably the best way to describe how nate is feeling at the moment. well. it’s an accurate way to describe his general mindset a lot of the time, but now especially. because, honestly, what the fuck is going on? 

it’s been like, what, a day now? two? since caleb sent him an owlet, saying he had seen stephanie of all people at school. apparently she goes here too now. which is fine — there’s not actually any bad blood between him and his ex-girlfriend, and he’d honestly be very excited at the prospect of seeing her again, be able to catch up, had it not been for one thing. caleb had mentioned she had a child. a child specifically old enough to have been born around the time steph had disappeared from ilvermorny.

there had been rumors, his fellow students whispering about why she had withdrawn from the school, but nate hadn’t thought much of them. because if steph was pregnant, she’d tell him, right? they were still friends. and so he had figured, the rumors were probably nothing more than baseless accusations, and surely there had been other reasons for the younger’s sudden disappearance. 

turns out the rumors were true, probably, if what caleb had said was anything to go on. nate trusts his best friend, of course he does, but not even he can deny that some of the shit that comes out of caleb’s mouth is sometimes, to put it mildly, less than intelligent. so while he didn’t doubt that his friend had seen stephanie with a child, he had to find out what the truth was for himself. 

not that he knows where to look for her, or that he has any way to contact her. which is why it’s not until days after caleb broke the news that he actually gets a chance to talk to her, following a chance meeting on his way back from one of the first quidditch practices of the season.

“stephanie. it’s really you.” his words are said both in surprise, and relief at finally catching her somewhere, even if it had been unintentional. she looks good, he notes. a bit different from what he remembers her as, more mature in a way. which makes sense, he supposes — it has been quite a few years at this point, after all. he tries to discreetly let his eyes search around her, but — no kid. maybe it hadn’t been hers?

"what?"

for once, the fear present in the young toseong student currently under xander's glare is something xander isn't enjoying.

the statement the student had made was clear enough in itself, however xander didn't expect the student to actually stand by it and deny him a ride alone on the haunted carriage ride.

"do you know know why i can see what's pulling these carriages?" xander simply snarls into the younger's face as he takes another step towards them, watching as they gulped and cowered in more fear underneath him. "do you really want me to explain to you exactly why i can see what's pulling them?"

when the student insists, stuttering that they can't let him on the ride alone, xander takes a silent step back to watch the fear in their eyes grow larger. he's about to unleash a hex on them when he suddenly hears a familiar voice. a voice that immediately stops him in his tracks.

he doesn't have to turn around to know who it is, and instead hardens his face again as he refocuses on the toseong student in front of him.

"my partners for the ride have just arrived." xander growls under his breath before he turns around to greet the pair walking towards him and the young student.

as soon as xander sees natsuki, his lips pull into a gentle smile while her eyes light up with excitement upon seeing him. and of course, following directly behind her is none other than stephanie himari who doesn't seem to keen on running into him.
