Novartis reveals long-term results for MS therapy Kesimpta #novartis #multiplesclerosis “Novartis has revealed new long-term data for its B-cell targeting therapy Kesimpta, showing that mean immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) were preserved in adults with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) receiving the therapy over 3.5 years. The results come from an ongoing label extension of the ALTHIOS study, which includes 1,703 people living with MS who received Kesimpta (ofatumumab) for up to five years. Lower serum immunoglobulin levels have been linked to an increased risk of infection – Kesimpta showed no association with risk of serious infection, according to the newly revealed data. Bristol Myers partners with Eisai in $650M deal for targeted cancer antibody #BMS #Esai “Bristol Myers Squibb and Eisai are partnering to develop a targeted drug that could be used to treat several types of cancer, with Bristol Myers paying Eisai $650 million upfront for rights to the Japanese company's synthetic antibody linked to a chemical toxin. Under the terms of the deal, $200 million of the upfront fee will pay Eisai's research and development costs. Eisai would also be eligible for up to $2.5 billion in milestone payments. The deal is a sign of Bristol Myers' interest in so-called antibody drug conjugates, or ADCs, and extends a spate of dealmaking in the space by large pharmaceutical companies. Merck & Co., AstraZeneca and Gilead have all spent billions of dollars to secure access to ADCs. Bayer subsidiary doses first patient with Parkinson’s disease cell therapy #parkinsonsdisease “German pharma company Bayer has announced that it has made progress in its ‘two-pronged’ approach to deliver cell and gene therapy candidates for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. BlueRock Therapeutics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bayer, has administered the first dose of DA01 – stem cell-derived dopaminergic neurons – to a Parkinson’s disease patient in a Phase I clinical study. This trial will enrol ten patients at sites in the US and Canada, with patients involved set to undergo surgical transplantation of the dopamine-producing cells into the putamen brain structure. Major study of diabetes trends shows Americans' blood sugar control is getting worse #diabetes “The researchers, whose findings will appear online June 9 in the New England Journal of Medicine, used data from an annual government-sponsored health study to analyze trends in blood sugar (or "glycemic") control, as well as blood pressure and cholesterol control among adults with diabetes. They found that the proportion of adults with diabetes achieving glycemic control improved from 1999 through the next 10 years, but then declined significantly—dropping from 57.4 percent during 2007-2010 to 50.5 percent during 2015-2018. There was also drop in the proportion achieving blood pressure control, while the proportion achieving cholesterol control essentially leveled off. "These are concerning findings. FDA grants historic approval to Alzheimer’s drug designed to slow cognitive decline #alzheimer #fdaapproval “The Food and Drug Administration on Monday approved the first new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease in nearly two decades, a landmark decision that has been eagerly awaited by millions of Americans diagnosed with the condition but that will be hotly contested by some in the scientific community who doubt the drug’s effectiveness. While other drugs treat symptoms of Alzheimer’s, the new medicine, called Aduhelm, is the first to attack what some believe is an underlying cause of the disease and slow cognitive decline, albeit marginally. It does so by eliminating clumps of a toxic protein believed to destroy neurons and cause dementia. Aduhelm is not a cure for Alzheimer’s, and it doesn’t reverse the disease’s progression. Artificial Intelligence Detects Lung Cancer Risk #lungcancer “According to the World Health Organization, there was an estimated 1.8 million deaths in 2020 from lung cancer. It is a leading cause of cancer death among men and women and each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. However, the number of new lung cancer cases continues to decrease, due to fewer people smoking and advances in early detection and treatment. The latest advance in early lung cancer detection involves artificial intelligence (AI).
