But the Arishok is more than just "I hate mages and this person who's brought me strife." Hawke could JUST AS EASILY connect with him over combat, books, debate, and/or an interest in each others' cultures. They both can definitely agree that Kirkwall needs serious help and order, even though they have different ideas on how to bring that about. And that's just what we've seen in canon. Depending on your headcanons for him, the Arishok could hold much more in common with Hawke other than "i hate these oppressed peoples".
And i agree with the fact that his character needs to be explored more outside of the Qun. I've read a few fics that do so, and a few do really well (including @mslanna !! CoC is one of my faves!!), while a couple turn it into a really gross and abusive relationship. I'm hoping to explore it myself with healthy steps in my own fic.
In fact, if the Arishok were to leave the Qun it'd be really interesting and satisfying to see him and Isabela work through that hate. Castillon was the one who drove them both into this situation, and the Arishok is not unreasonable.

Fic title: Orange Thursday
this would absolutely be a caius/al fic! because orange thursday follows pink wednesday, obviously. :D
it’d be a short funny type of fic, in seven appropriately named parts, with caius orchestrating matching outfits in the the seven colours of the rainbow pride flag for pride week*, probably, and al just long-sufferingly goes along with it (but also secretly enjoys it).
