Author: Ruquas
Card #: MRP-104
Square Filled: G1 - Secret Identiy discovered
Pairing: None, John and Bucky as characters
Rating: G
Warnings: No archive warnings apply
Summary:
Bucky though… John usually saw Bucky wandering around like a ghost. Not every night. Not that John was up every night. But often enough. It wasn’t even that the man went out of his way to stay hidden. It was the whole way Bucky carried himself. No stride. Not looking forward. Just… walking, head slightly lowered and seemingly trying to make himself small.

From the rooftop of the gray concrete building, Bucky Barnes held his rifle, peering through the thermal scope, but there was no need.
“Three snipers in the north tower, two guards at the side entrance... and one with a cigar who is about to become a father," he reported, his voice barely a whisper through the communicator.
From the bottom of the building, underground, a female figure descended through the ventilation ducts. Natasha Romanoff.
“Don't shoot the one with the cigar," she whispered. Fathers-to-be tend to be easier to intimidate. Less willing to die.
“Copied," replied Bucky, with a faint smile that no one saw.
The mission was simple on paper: free twelve hostages from a genetic information trafficking organization.
The problem was that the building was a trap.
And both Natasha and Bucky knew that they weren't sent to places where the word "hostages" was literal without expecting one of them to end up tied up.
“What is the status?“ Sam asked from the base.
“We like to improvise," Natasha replied, before cutting the channel.
On the first floor, I had already neutralized four guards. No shots fired. All stealthy. But then, a crunch of metal. A change in air pressure.
And a second later, the pipeline exploded in red smoke and dust.
Natasha fell. The impact stunned her. Before she could get up, she felt something cold on her neck.
A needle.
Then, darkness.
“Wake up, Romanoff," spat a male voice with a Serbian accent. We were wondering how long it would take you to get back here.
Natasha opened her eyes.
She was tied to a metal chair. Her wrists ached, clenched in shackles she knew all too well. In front of her, six other hostages. To her right, also tied but standing, with a reinforced chain on the metal wrist: Bucky.
“You know the plan was not to let us be captured, right?“ said Natasha, without looking at him.
“I didn't want to leave you alone with your trauma," he replied, almost in an ironic tone.
“What a gentleman.
She spat blood to the side. He tensed his jaw.
The room was large, cold, and with pipes coming out of the walls. Drops could be heard falling from some corner.
And outside, voices in mixed languages. The group that captured them was not amateur. They knew who Natasha and Bucky were.
And yet, they had wanted them alive. Which meant only one thing.
Interrogation.
“Barnes... Romanoff," said a bald man with sunken eyes. The Soldier and the Widow. What a pair of trophies. We want their codes. We want their memories.
“It's going to cost you more than this," Natasha replied with a mocking tone. Bucky reacted. The metal arm creaked against the chain.
“Don't even think about it," he growled, with a killer calm.
“Then cooperate.
“Shoot me.“ Bucky raised his chin. Or set me free and see how much you can take. The man turned to Natasha.
“What about you?
Hours later, when the electricity failed (thanks to a makeshift detonator that Natasha hid in the sole of her boot), the room was plunged into darkness.
And when the emergency light came back... Bucky was no longer chained.
The guard watching him was unconscious or dead; they didn't know, and they didn't care either.
“Time to move," he said as he broke Natasha's shackles. She stood up, staggering.
“We have six minutes before reinforcements arrive," he muttered.
“Then we'd better run fast," replied Bucky.
The other hostages followed. Natasha covered the rear. Bucky led the way. Gunshots. Explosions. Doors knocked down.

The air was humid in Prague that early morning. The street lamps were faintly flickering. Bucky Barnes sat alone on a bench facing the river, the only place that hadn’t changed.
Every so often, Bucky returned to that bench. Someone from the shadows.
Yelena.
No, not Yelena.
The silhouette was different. More serene. More broken. Natasha.
But it wasn’t real.
It couldn’t be real.
They just stood there. Together. Broken, but together.
Bucky closed his eyes.
They embraced. It was brief, firm, and strong. An embrace without words. And for the first time in a long time, it didn't hurt.
