toph birthing two children remains one of the more interesting choices in tlok to me. from the way her daughters describe their childhood, it's not strange at all that they'd believe themselves to have been unwanted, and yet the wider context suggests that toph could have very easily gotten rid of them had she wanted to. she didn't have to go through those pregnancies, and it's likely that she wouldn't have liked to: she hates feeling restrained and inconvenienced, and there's no way to carry to term, birth, and keep alive an infant without being restrained and inconvenienced by them. despite this, she chose to do it. in fact, she chose to do it twice. so, she must have wanted a family, and she must have wanted them to be her family. though she may not have done the best job raising lin and suyin, she wished for them and she loved them. it was never about anyone else. they were always "it" for her.
