In the heat of the desert, near Hamunaptra, Alex Manes is wondering what on Earth he’s done to deserve this life. Yes, you could tell him that he’d made the choice to fight, but his father hadn’t left him many options as far as his future was concerned. Nearby, the clash of swords and guns reminds him of his supposed “choice”.He could choose to fight or he could be disowned and lose the Manes name.

These days, the latter has been looking far more promising.

One day, Michael is going to prove to the world that he's more than a poor orphan with anger issues -- a map to the Book of Life ought to do it, along with a guide who'll show him and his family the way, even if he's a brute and a rogue (and devilishly handsome all the same). It's only a shame that nothing in life is easy, especially not when ancient curses get involved.

comment: if you love the mummy, you’ll love this au. manda does an amazing job, as usual, of taking these characters and slotting them seamlessly into an au scenario. it’s the little details that always get me, the bits of dialogue, the scene descriptions, the fantastic characterisation. the tone of this fic is perfect as well. it gives me all the same warm, fuzzy feelings that the mummy does, only it’s got my favourite boys in it.

Once the fourth alien crisis dies down and Roswell goes back to being a sleepy little town in the middle of nowhere, Alex gets to focus on his personal life again. For the first little while, it’s the kind of awkward that he isn’t sure how to deal with. Things between him and Maria are still strained, not because they’re mad at each other, but they’re not sure how comfortable they both are, having slept with the same man and the feelings that might be developing.

Liz is in the giddy throes of new love and is distracted with trying to find new work, and while Alex and Kyle get along, it’s a little awkward when you take out all the alien hunting from their interactions because there’s still a lot to get over.

It’s the perfect storm for Alex to put his money where his mouth is and see if he and Michael can be friends..

Alex is proud to say how great he and Michael are at this whole 'being friends' thing, but what might have escaped his notice is that most friends don't have the kind of relationship that he and Michael do. (But, if he paid attention, he'd notice that most boyfriends do).

comment: i still can’t believe this series is ooooover. if i could, i would wrap this fic around me when i’m sad or need some comfort, because it is sweet, sometimes a little silly, and just so full of warmth and happiness. each part in the series has a different theme, based around the idea that “alex and michael are xx but don’t realise it and are the last to know” including dating, married, etc. it really is just 29k of delight and if you haven’t read it, i can’t recommend it highly enough, especially as we speed towards season two.

When Michael Guerin is eighteen years old, he strikes out to make something of himself.

He goes west and makes it almost all the way to Arizona, at which point he gets a job on the Manes ranch as a stable hand.

It turns out that it’s not the horses he has a touch with, but all the equipment around the farm. He can take the creak out of any door, he can fix any machine, and he’s able to mend broken things that have no business being mended. He has a touch. The horses don’t seem to mind him, but he isn’t able to break in a single stallion the way the Manes boys can, and he certainly can’t hold a candle to the youngest’s talents.

Woodworking and equipment aren’t the only things that Michael finds he has a touch with.

It turns out that when you sleep with a man's youngest, then steal his prized stallion to escape, your face ends up on a wanted poster. When the man who got you in that situation goes into the bounty hunting business and comes hunting you down, it's usually not a good sign. Lucky for Michael, Alex Manes isn't the kind of man who plays by his father's rules..

comment: honestly, fuckin’ yeehaw is all i can say about this badboy. manda is so good at giving the people (me) what they want (even when i didn’t know i wanted it) and this fic knocked my socks off. from the tenderness and yearning between the boys at the start, to alex’s wily determination and michael’s first breaths of freedom towards the end. please go and give this some love if you haven’t already; if the inherent homo-eroticism of cowboys isn’t enough to draw you in, you should read it just because manda’s never steered us wrong.

He hadn’t meant to. In fact, it had been the last thing that he’d been meaning to do, but he’d been trying to get a better look at the world below and had fallen out of his perfectly stable state, careening towards the ground. He’s shifted into a form far more suitable to the world below, but unfortunately, is every bit as fragile as those who live on the ground.

He crash lands and it’s far from pretty.

Alex wants a kiss, his brothers want the throne, and Noah wants power. Sadly, no one bothered to ask Michael what he wants. As time continues to go by, there's only one thing he wants at all -- Alex Manes.

comment: manda has brought us so many amazing aus, so when she said she was going to take on a stardust fic, i about lost my goddamn mind. it turned out to be everything that i wanted, which is amazing cause the expectations were so high. the blending of rnm characters and stardust plot/lore is fascinating; there are things that i guessed and felt vindicated when they came up, and there were things that took me by delighted surprise. it’s such a good read and i’m super biased about it cause i pushed for this fic but i just ended up loving it so damn much.

He’d taken the phone from his assistant when clearly no progress was being made. “I rented it from you, I need a new one!” The agency tells him that they’re very sorry, but being that it’s the holidays, they have no other cars available. The best they could do was to send him to the auto repair shop in town and promise to reimburse him when he returned it. When Alex Manes had made it big on the music scene, he thought he’d be done with these types of situations, but here he is, as frustrated as ever. He’s not sure who he wants to blame here, but he’s pretty sure this one comes back to him. He’s the one who’d wanted to spend Christmas in Roswell after his father and brothers had waved him off, too busy with their own plans to have Alex for the holidays.

comment: looking for a soap opera-esque fic with plenty of drama and a happy ending? this girl will hook you up. the plot is like something out of a soap opera but, as always, the writing is so good that i forgot the soapyness was the whole point. it just felt like i was reading another great malex fic. there are some immensely satisfying moments in here; michael’s return, their first words to each other in years, alex demanding to know his fiance’s involvement in michael’s torture, him taking THE SAFETY OFF. oh man. so good. so satisfying. and that’s not even the whole first half of the fic. and it’s got a happy ending so you can read it as a little pick me up!

The Roswell crash of 1947 is a legend in the hunting community. There are whole sects of hunters who focus specifically on these aliens, who landed and scattered throughout the states with their own powers. They talk about pods that kept some of them in stasis, which means that the aliens can range from being very young to very old, but one thing stays the same –

They have powers and they’re dangerous.

Alex Manes is in the family business -- saving people, hunting aliens. The problem is that after he meets Michael Guerin on a hunt, those doubts about whether he's truly a Manes man are only getting worse.

comment: i have no great love of supernatural but if the show was anything like this, i’d watch the hell out of it. this fic has all of andrealyn’s usual fantastic descriptions and dialogue with the added bonus of that “hunter aesthetic” that supernatural did well in the first season. the way the aliens are tied in is nice and clever, and the family dynamics between alex and his brothers (and father) are so on point i hated them almost immediately. the interactions between alex and michael in the bar are just the cherry on top of a tasty cake. it’s a great au and a great read!!
