hello!! for the build-a-fic prompt thing: 13 O đ + h50 if you like, but feel free to head elsewhere with it if inspiration strikes + i'm very sorry to hear that the writing problems aren't a localized cloud hovering specifically over my house
Sometimes I don't write mcdanno for a while and I'm like 'noo... what if i've lost their voices..... what if i can't do it anymore.....' and then I start writing them and remember no. they're really easy to write. they're just both desperately in love and terrible at clear emotional expression. and these prompts are (i assume deliberately) incredibly perfect for them.
Anyway. I would offer an explanation, if not an excuse, for this taking so long but let's be real. this is just an accurate demonstration of how long it takes me to write anything under normal circumstances.
writing prompts!
ę°Â 13Â ęą âi say this with all the love in my heart, but you look like shit.â
ę°Â OÂ ęą delight

The first sight to greet Steve as the cargo bay doors open is a small, grumpy, blond Jerseyian heading straight for him with the kind of scowl best suited to taking down a murderer who'd just insulted his mother.
The wave of gut-punch relief is so strong Steve almost falls the last few steps.
The first thing Danny does when he gets close enough is pull Steve into a hug, which is good, because otherwise Steve would've had to do it. And you can never tell whether Danny's going to just return a hug, or return it and then shove you in the chest for the privilege.
Of course, he can still do that if he's the one to initiate the hug, and promptly does. There's strong arms around Steve, then a half-curled hand forceful over his heart, then the same hand resting half of Danny's weight against his shoulder. Steve's pretty much fine with all of it, because it all means Danny's touching him and the world has clicked back into place.
The first actual words Danny says to him are, "You look terrible."
Steve grins, giddy with delight, and tells him, "You don't look so hot yourself."
"No, I'm serious," Danny says. "I say this with all the love in my heart, but you look like shit. Have you slept since you left Hawaii? For that matter, have you eaten? And army coffee and MREs don't count."
"Navy coffee."
âStill doesnât count.â Dannyâs straightened up a little, but the hand is still on Steveâs shoulder, running up and down and squeezing and loosening, a point of heat in the infinitely temperate Honolulu evening air. âI repeat, have you eaten?â
âDepends what youâve got at home, Danno.â
âI have uncooked pasta and too many takeout boxes, because Iâm not your housewife and in case youâve forgotten, Iâve been running the whole damn mission from this end.â
Steve wasnât entirely lying - Danny doesnât look great, in the grand scheme of Dannyness. Thereâs dark circles under his eyes, a face thatâs a little too pale under the grimly Hawaiian-borne tan, and a certain lax dullness to the gelled hair that altogether speak to too little sleep and too much worry. âMissionâs over,â Steve says, and slings an arm around his shoulders.
Given theyâre still facing each other, itâs a little like hugging him again, but within the realm of deniability.
âIâll believe that when you donât look like youâve spent five days down a hole.â
Steve doesnât explicitly point out that he kind of has spent five days down a hole, albeit a reasonably well kitted-out one. He does say, âHey, my hole had Navy coffee. What did yours have?â
âMalasadas,â Danny immediately returns.Â
âOkay, you win.â
âThat was easier than normal.â
âYeah, well. I havenât slept since I left Hawaii.â
Danny glares at him, which is immensely comforting, and curls the hand thatâs never left Steveâs arm tight above his elbow, which is slightly ominous. Then he starts bodily pulling Steve out of the hangar, which brings it back to comforting.
Steve takes a few stumbles after him before finally asking, âWhere are we going?â
âIâm taking you to bed.â
âAnd we havenât even had dinner.â
Dannyâs only response to Steveâs sterling wit is, âI said I had uncooked pasta. Youâre capable of filling up a pot.â
âIâm touched by the faith you have in me.â
âTouched, sure. Thatâs the word.â
He is still quite literally touched, all the way to the car, where Danny drags him forcefully to the passenger side and blocks him in until he gives up and opens the door. Heâs honestly sleep-deprived enough that he probably wouldnât be safe to drive, not that Danny looks much better.Â
They sit in a comfortable, if exhausted, silence until Danny backs the Camaro out of its haphazardly parked spot and theyâre on the way home. Then Danny says, eyes still on the road, with the kind of grumpiness whose girders and foundations could only be built out of yearsâ worth of comfort and love, âStop smiling at me. Itâs not making you look any better.â
âCareful,â Steve says lazily, entirely failing to comply with instructions. âIf you insult my looks any more, Iâll start thinking you like me for my brain.â
âGod forbid.â
The tension in Dannyâs beautifully familiar profile has loosened a little, as much as it ever does, replaced with the soft easiness of a path trod hundreds of time in a hundred different situations. Now that itâs no longer an active order, Steve transfers his gaze to the parallel lines of the road peeling away in front of them and settles further back into his seat. He can see the ocean, and he can hear Danny breathing next to him. Thatâs enough to make him happy.

Wait I just realised Danny moving to Hawaii to be with Grace is literally the polar opposite of what John did to Steve and Mary. Like no wonder Dannyâs parenting is one of the things Steve instantly latches onto as âI am going to love you forever for this specificallyâ - John sent his kids an ocean away from him while Danny moved himself across an ocean so that his kid wouldnât be taken away from him
Just got my second Pfizer shot and suddenly Iâm very very emotional about the ways Steve and Danny love people. Like, theyâve both got So Much love, but they send it out into the world very differently? Danny loves and cares about all of his friends and family but itâs mostly in a very quiet, calm way, but then he has just two or three people that he loves SO much and with such absolute force behind it, like heâs throwing absolutely everything that he is into it. Rachel must have been that at some point, and his kids, and Steve, and thatâs it. Maybe his parents, especially Clara, but he doesnât see them so much anymore. Whereas Steve doesnât love people with that absolute force (except for the ways that he does, with Danny, but thatâs another matter) but he loves⌠everyone. Like, given their respective histories, Danny should be the one whoâs more likely to see the good in people, but he isnât, itâs Steve who always desperately wants to look for the good in people and to believe in them, and as soon as anyone comes anywhere near his emotional vicinity heâs totally invested in them and loving them, but⌠softly. All-encompassingly. Danny loves like a meteor, Steve loves like the sun.
And thatâs reflected in the ways they get hurt, too. Steveâs had so many betrayals and heartbreaks in his life, because he trusts and invests in so many people, even when he shouldnât, but he also always manages to recover from them and keep functioning through them, because itâs never his whole world thatâs come crashing down on him. And he always, always, tries to bring them back into his life, whether he succeeds, like with Cath, or is never able to, like with Doris. Whereas Danny⌠itâs hard to get to Danny, but when one of his people hurts him, itâs so strong. Like, itâs canon that if it werenât for Grace, and for Matt constantly coming over, he could well have killed himself after the divorce, if only from alcohol poisoning. And you see it with Steve - we only get brief glimpses of it, but he clearly shuts down when heâs gone dark during ka iâo, heâs doing his job but heâs just⌠doing his job; even early on when Steve leaves him the Dear John Korea letter, he gets so mad because he gets so upset. And itâs why heâs so clearly depressed at the start of the show, because the only Person he has left he only gets to see every other weekend. Steve gets hurt easily and often, because so many people can hurt him, but no-one ever destroys him; Danny lets extremely few people close enough to hurt him seriously at all, but the people he does, my god, they can break him into a million pieces and he knows it.

âAnd then she asked if the Illuminati had videoed us!â
There was a general laugh from the room, and Steve grinned at Jerry from the seat heâd taken at the back of the room just in time to hear his latest story. Jerry was taking full advantage of the opportunity to perform to his captive audience, and was regaling them with tales both Five-0 related and not. Chin walked up to him and slapped him on the shoulder, then said something quiet to him with a smile. He pouted slightly, but ceded his makeshift stage to Chin.Â
âAs you know, I met Jer at school way back in the day,â his calm voice rang out. âEven then, we all knew he had to be destined for, well, stranger things...â
Grover sat down next to Steve and nudged him. âHey, how long you been sitting back here?â
Steve summoned up a smile, ignoring his head spinning, and replied, âFifteen.â
âSEAL stealth mode on, huh?â
âSomething like that.â
Grover frowned at him but refrained from saying anything. âI think Chinâs going to pull the rest of us up after heâs done lauding Jerry. Rightly, he deserves lauding. Laudation? Anyway, Williamsâ is gonna need to be here too, where is he?â
Steve glanced around the room. âHasnât he come in? He must be in the kitchen.â
âYou want me to go get him? You look crashed out after all the jumping-off-bridges shit.â
He waved a hand. âNo, Iâll get him.â He placed his still-full beer down and stood up in small, careful movements. He could feel the suspicious eyes of an ex-Chicago cop on his back as he moved out the room but he assiduously ignored them.Â
Danny was probably just staying out of the crowd trying to digest the information, and he didnât know if seeing him would make it worse or better, but seeing someone else would definitely be worse. He sighted the grey-shirted back bent over his kitchen counter, hat lying next to his hands, and hovered in the doorway until he noticed that he seemed to be frozen and his ribcage was rapidly expanding and contracting. He moved at speed to place a hand gently on his back, heat soaking into his fingers.Â
âHey, Danny,â he started softly. âYou okay?â
âWhat does it look like?â his taut voice snapped, head still bent to the counter. âHaving a panic attack is not okay, Steven.â
âNo,â he agreed, rubbing soothing circles on his back. âBut itâs alright. Everythingâs fine, Danno. Weâre okay.â
His shoulders shook with tension and Steve took a step closer, anxiously waiting for the post-freeze collapse.Â
âNo, itâs not!â There was a pause as Danny struggled to produce words. âYou have radiation poisoning, how is that alright? And unspecified âlong-term effectsâ, which could be anything from occasional nausea to aggressive cancers. And you almost died today anyway! What if youâd had a spell, whatever that means, while you were jumping? Or while you were uncoupling the trailer? You would be dead, Steve! No maybes, you. Would. Be. Dead. What the fuck am I supposed to do if you die?âÂ
Steve vainly struggled for answers, but came up with nothing, too preoccupied with the thought of their situations being reversed. Danny let out a breath of air that was almost a sob and finally collapsed, arms falling beneath him. âExactly.â
Steve extended his other arm beneath him to take his weight as he fell, then moved them so that his back was to the counter, Dannyâs head on his chest. He bent his own neck to rest his forehead on top of his head, closing his eyes. âI donât have answers, kuâu Lei,â he said softly. âBut Iâm here now. I love you.â
Danny straightened slightly and circled his own arms around the taller man. âI need you, Steve,â he said on a long exhale.
dying over you calling manul/pallas' cat the Danny Williams of the Cat world, that's so perfect! They are also covered in blonde fur and have disproportionately short legs, look very cuddly but are actually the personification of *fight me*
oh my god, I can't believe I didn't even consider the blonde fur or the tiny legs. I just saw the second-last gif and went 'i know that face. I've seen that face before. on My Blorbo Daniel'. my mother always calls him a bantam rooster but I think we have a strong alternative contender here
