Mr. Beef Wants Me Dead
True story: A few years ago a client wanted to go to lunch. He picked Mr. Beef since he was from out of town and heard it was a must to try which was fine with me because I had never been. I was eating my beef sandwich when all of a sudden I started to choke. He had to do the heimlich on me! No joke. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life.
I vowed never to eat at Mr. Beef again because I was traumatized.
Fast forward years later to last night. We were out with friends drinking, it's late, everyone parts ways, and my boyfriend is hungry. We have the taxi driver try and take us to Portillo's but they are CLOSED so the taxi driver suggests Mr. Beef. I immediately start to panic but then I think to myself...the choking incident was a fluke and I will be fine. What do you think happened next? You guessed it. I choked on the freaking sandwich my third bite in.
Lesson of the day: I cannot eat Mr. Beef...EVER AGAIN. Clearly, I don't know how to chew my food properly. I am a moron. Â
Mr. Beef on Orleans
Chicago is a city famed for its italian beefs. There are countless chains that have spread around the Chicagoland area which sell the food. I have tried many of these such as Portillo's and Al's and not been too impressed. I feel the best and most authentic italian beef you can find in Chicago is at Mr. Beef. Jay Leno even claims this is a must stop restaurant for him whenever he's in the Windy City.
Each of the times I have gone I've simply requested an Italian Beef Sandwich "the way I'm supposed to have it." I'm pretty sure what they've given me is simply their Italian Beef sandwich with sweet peppers. I'm not usually a pepper fan, but this sandwich makes that void. There is not much else I can say for this restaurant. It's not an experience place - just a simple "hole in the wall" joint. I suppose my readers just get my opinion in this article. Mr. Beef sells one of the best tasting beef sandwiches I have ever had. That's that.
