the dichotomy of the level of stakes in each episode of Downton Abbey will always be funny to me. Some episodes are like

“Thomas is on the brink of being fired for being gay”

“it’s the actual World War I”

“Sybil could very well die in childbirth”

“Bates has been arrested for a murder he didn’t commit”

“one of the staff caused a MISCARRIAGE of someone from Upstairs”

“Thomas has been found half dead in a self-inflicted bloody bathtub”

And then other episodes are like

“Will Carson let the staff go to the town fair”

“who will win the flower competition”

“The cooks dropped the chicken on the floor”

“Sybil is wearing pants”

“Branson is still fraternizing with the Downstairs”

i've probably posted about this before but the best scene in thomas' season 3 "incident" is when mr bates goes outside his house at like midnight and thomas is just ?? there ?? just kinda staring at the house and smoking his little cigarette ?? and mr bates is not at all surprised by this ?? and then they have a whole conversation without ever addressing that it might be a little weird that thomas might have been out there ?? and then thomas drops his cigarette on the ground, walks away, and they never talk about it again. is your gay little coworker standing outside your house at an ungodly late hour of the night really not that surprising ?? how often does he do this ??

so i binged downtown abbey for the first time last month and somehow my entire life i’ve avoided any spoilers or any discourse about the show or fandom at all and so as soon as i finished i rannnn to ao3 and tumblr to see if any of my top predicted popular ships were correct, as well as my thoughts on which characters and storylines were the most liked.

i was right sometimes, vindicated others, and sometimes, just plain wrong like hilariously wrong like im not sure if we were watching the same show wrong. here is the analysis of my predictions and thoughts from watching downtown abbey in the big 2026. if u even care.
