Coming back to that nobleman's estate to find it burned down and hearing that no men from that mansion had survived completely RUINED Yue Qi.

Later he found out that the boy he was trying so hard to save had survived, but was turned by his life experience into a mirror of his abuser, which had then led to this boy's(now man's) downfall at the hands of his own victim, Luo Binghe - yet another child Yue Qingyuqn was unable to protect.

When Luo Binghe uses Xiao Jiu as bait for Yue Qingyuan, the latter walks into an obvious trap because he would rather die than not even try to rescue Xiao Jiu a second time.

Yue Qingyuan clearly has an endless wealth of love and nurturing and he needs to have children that he can take care and protect and nurture and love.
