MPLS Run: I came off the bike feeling good, did not over do it and had plenty left for the run. Started out at a fast pace doing the first couple miles at 6min/mile, then dialed it back a bit sense my legs were feeling crampy and walking does not make for good video. Speaking of video, my side kick Jason was close behind on his bike filming me, saving me having to wear a camera on my head.
You can see in the photo Jay has a speaker on the font of his bike to play music, which makes us a big hit with the racers. Has a practical purpose as well, allows me to know where Jay is behind me so I can adjust my speed or position if he has to fall back because of traffic, and it lets other racers know we are coming.
I hit the finish line feeling strong, had to slow up a bit because with Jay behind me I don't want to go sprinting around people in the narrow finishing shoot.
Finished the race in 2:19:10 putting me in 3rd place in my age group (first reported as 4th, now the website says 3rd, I'll take it) and 45th overall. I did the swim in 27min, averaged 22.6mph on the bike and 6:42/mile on the run. One of my fastest races yet. Looking forward to the NYC tri in a couple weeks.
MPLS Bike: The MPLSTri offered quite an exciting bike course, urban to say the least. I was feeling pretty strong coming out of the water, but made sure I did not go to hard at the start of the bike (I tend do that) trying to save a little something for the second half of the course. I found myself chasing a guy in an orange kit (similar to mine) most of the race. We did a little yo-yoing, I like to think I was attacking and he was having to counter (Tour de France on my mind this week) but I am sure he didn't even notice me. I am pretty sure he came into T2 a little ahead of me, but I passed him right away on the run! I had two cameras mounted under my aero bars (these photos are screen grabs from them) to capture the bike. I always say a little prayer when I turn stop them recording in transition, hoping to hear the tell tale beep that indicates things worked correctly. This time both cameras worked as expected, one kept wanting to vibrate off it's mount because of all the bumps in the road, but I kept sliding it back on, and it made it to the end. As usual my sidekick Jay was waiting for me in transition so he could film me on the run, he has a lot to do while I am on the bike so I am always glad to hear his voice behind me when I get to my rack, means I don't have to wait for him and I can just keep on racing!
Flying the Trail Genius copter over the water can be a bit stressful, but the results can be really cool. Fun to fly over pro triathletes as they start a race.
MPLS Swim: My escapades with Trail Genius took me to the Life Time Minneapolis Tri this weekend where the big guns came out the play! Before I got to start my race, I was able to help partner Jason film the pro start with TG copter, fun to see big names like Ben Collins (1st), Cameron Dye (2nd), and Hunter Kemper (3rd), Alicia Kaye (1st), Radka Vodickova (2nd), and Jillian Petersen (3rd).
My personal race went pretty good, one of the fastest times I have put in on a swim. Was trying out a new swim skin instead of a wetsuit, I missed the buoyancy of the wetsuit but enjoyed how comfortable but still fast the skin was. Also allowed me to wear my Trail Genius kit under, making T1 a snap.
We tried something new at this race, we had a member of the crew follow me in a canoe with a camera mounted on it, so we could supplement the video we get with the TG Copter sense it can't reach the entire course. Came out really good, a great way to view the swim. I had to keep an eye out for the canoe so I could try and stay to the outside so he could follow easy. Made for a different kind of swim, but I managed to keep moving at a pretty good pace.
When I came out of the water that is when the TG Copter took over filming again and followed me all the way into T1. Jay did a great job piloting, getting some of our best swim video yet.

I find that one of the toughest parts of racing can be just getting out of bed in the morning! This is how I felt about the 4:30am start at the #MPLSTri Saturday.
