I’m looking at ways to visualize ethnographic research data. Especially since I have a grant due next week where I’ll use some of the research tools that I’ve been using for this course. This example assesses how users interact and engage with MOOCs through a multi year study. This is very helpful in designing learning materials to better engage your target audience. 

I also conducted an expert interview as part of my ethnographic research. Dr. Henkin completed a PhD and has transitioned to a career outside of the bench, so I’ve also incorporated his thoughts into my design problem of how to get graduate students and postdoctoral fellows more exposure to career options outside of academia. We also discussed some of the hurdles that students and fellows encounter in making the transition from their academic training to the broader workforce. This interview was very helpful for me in beginning to think about my design solution through an empathetic lens! 

I have a set of these small cast iron pans, and I always felt like they were adorable and so functional. I couldn’t quite articulate why they made me so warm and fuzzy until I realized that their design is meant to be personal. This story is a testament to the empowering and personal nature of human-centered design. I have a set of them, so that each of our guests can have a unique personalized experience when we host dinner parties. These small pans create a sense of intimacy that is simply phenomenal. And are great for portion control!
