Professor Pomona Sprout has always been an early riser, out of habit and also to check on her plants. She wakes with the sunlight and to think this morning would be like any other would be particularly silly in the current climate. Her living quarters werenât far from the Greenhouses, so after sheâs done her morning routine checking the plants, she takes the familiar walk back to the Great Hall for breakfast --- and stops short. Across the length of the corridor walls, painted in red, there are names. Not just any names.Â
JUSTIN FINCH-FLETCHLEY. OLIVER RIVERS. ROGER MALONE. KEVIN ENTWHISTLE. HERMIONE GRANGER. DEAN THOMAS. COLIN CREEVEY. DENNIS CREEVEY. IRENE DENHOLM. SARAH KEMPSTONE.Â
All the wrongly convicted and missing Muggleborns. Professor Sprout keeps walking, her heart in her throat, and pauses again as she enters the Great Hall. ALBUS DUMBLEDORE painted in red directly above the Headmasterâs seat in the Great Hall. CEDRIC DIGGORY above the doors. BERTHA JORKINS on the walls, along with SIRIUS BLACK, AMELIA BONES, SOPHIE BONES, EMMELINE VANCE, DAWN ROPER and the rest of the dead.
WE WONâT FORGET. The largest words of all, above the staff table and in full view of anyone who sits in the Hall. Professor Sproutâs eyes are misty, but they settle on the Carrows at the staff table, waving their wand vigorously at the writing and yelling obscenities.Â
âWell, donât just stand there --- help, you old bat!â Amycus Carrow screams at her when he sees her standing by the doors, and Sprout pushes away her tears so her eyes can harden. Raises her wand half-heartedly and attempts a few spells, but theyâre the stuff she learnt in third year Charms class, not anything of particular substance. When the writing doesnât budge, she shrugs at the Carrows and then proceeds to take her usual seat at the staff table. When McGonagall comes in ten minutes later, she does the same thing. One by one, the staff files in and strangely a group of highly trained wizards and witches canât seem to remove the writing off the walls.Â
âItâs a reminder of why weâre fighting,â someone at the Gryffindor table says to another, once the students all come in. Some turn on their heel at the door and never make it back in. Others sit down bravely, looking at the names of their loved ones. âItâs there as a reminder.â
