I was recently honored to keynote the 10th anniversary celebration for New Bern’s Business Referral Network. We talked about moving from selfishly “getting” referrals to unselfishly “earning” referrals.  During a breakout session, every group agreed that the best way to earn referrals is to OVER-DELIVER EVERY SINGLE TIME. In other words, if you want to get referrals, be referable. Provide so much value and help that someone will be inspired to refer you.  How about you? What is your baker’s dozen? During my recent Recruiters of Wisconsin keynote, I introduced my TENergy philosophy, which focuses on how respecting each other at a high level becomes contagious. For example, if I concentrate on the positive aspects of you, value you and see you as a 10, then hopefully you'll reciprocate, search out the worthwhile in me and see me as a 10. If we see each other as 10's, it's more likely that others in our lives will be viewed in a similar manner ... it's a ripple effect, a real life dominoes experience. Immediately, my friend and audience participant, Lynnette Zitzke, raised her hand and asked, "What if we loved our neighbors like we love our pets? Do you think we'd be closer to TENergy?" I responded, "I do!" The next day, Lynnette expanded her thought in a private message to me that said, "If we loved our neighbors like we love our pets, the world would have more extreme love, extreme compassion, extreme forgiveness, and extreme concern for the lost." You see, it all starts with one person fully respecting another person ... the power of positive thinking. I recently had the opportunity to teach Lakeshore Technical College students who are entering the workforce how to effectively connect with a heavy emphasis on getting an interview. We took a moment to "power pose" because Harvard research shows that people who took on a power pose for just two minutes before a job interview were more likely to be hired. At Lakeshore Technical College's annual in-service last week, I tried the "Janitor Test" and asked their 250 team members, "What is the name of your janitor?" In a split second, they all enthusiastically shouted, "Judy!" For the first time since I've been teaching connecting, every single person in the audience knew the janitor's name. After the event, I commended Judy for her dedication and commitment to LTC, told her the story, and took a quick selfie. She said, "You made my day." I responded, "You made my day too." The point: Don't complicate business with busyness.
