One of the things that every fashion MMO promises is that you'll make friends. Yes, you can decorate your rooms and dress up your avatar in a cute outfit and play games and have pets, but what is all of that worth if you're enjoying them with other people? While all those things are important features, friends are the thing meant to tie it all together. They give you a reason to log in and play for longer than the 10 minutes it takes you to figure out your next 'fit. And quite frankly, it's just nice to have them.
So why don't I?
I've spent countless hours cooking up cute looks in game like Woozworld and Moviestarplanet. I'm quite passionate about these games. I've dedicated an entire blog to chronicling my fashion, thoughts, and experiences. How could I, over my many years on these games, not have made lasting friendships through them? Well, I'm exaggerating a bit. I have made friends on these games but many of them ended in bad blood and the connections I have still are weak. I barely speak to these people both in and outside of the games. But the crucial issue is why I'm unable to form new connections.
I actually already provided the answer. Most of the long-term friendships I've tried to build within my favorite games have ended unceremoniously. Racism, ableism, poor communication, and other poor qualities lead to these relationships breaking down and as I get older I feel less inclined to try my hand at befriending other fashionable fellows in an effort to avoid more situations where I put emotional energy into a person who ultimately ends up not being worth the trouble.
That being said, it's lonely as hell. Despite avoiding interaction with other players directly, I do still yearn for a group of friends that make me want to log in just to see them. I yearn for in-game club formations and a clique to call my own. I want to shop with friends and create matching outfits. I want to form in-game group chats and even take convos out of game. I want to hold events with and for them and just have a good time. Instead, I pathetically log in for my daily rewards and log out with the only exception to this being days where I get the urge to change my outfit. In which case, I'll be online for maybe 30 minutes longer than usual.
But making friends, especially as an adult, is hard! Many of the most vocal and active players in these communities suck! Truth be told, I don't have a solution to this problem and I'm mostly using this article to vent my frustrations with being unable to cultivate community in games that advertise it as a selling point.
There is a silver lining, though. I do have positive casual interactions with people all the time. I'll get DMs and profile replies full of compliments and I'll compliment others unprompted as well. I try to be helpful to new players and answer game questions when asked. I try to make the experience positive for others and I do have positive things happen to me in turn.
Though I must admit. It'd be nice to have my own little clique.
