Veery (Catharus fuscescens)

Catharus thruses can be difficult for beginner birders to identify as the ones which migrate through our area are varying shades of brown with dappled chests. The Veery is thankfully a little easier to identify- their rich cinnamon color is brighter than the rest of their genus, on par with that of a Wood Thrush.

This bird in particular has been outfitted with a MOTUS transmitter. While I don't know the details of this particular project (I was just an extra set of hands), MOTUS tags are used to track movement in birds. The tags are weighed to make sure they don't add extra stress to the bird's flying weight, and the harness fits around their thighs to ensure the bird has its entire natural range of motion. The tags have a battery life of a few years, so hopefully we'll get some good data on this bird for a while!

All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share images was granted by Phillips Tract Banding Station (PTBS).
