Commissioned by Volvo’s Italian importer, Motauto, the 164 GTZ was presented at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show. Based on Volvo’s 164 3-litre, 6-cylinder flagship, the GTZ was designed by Giuseppe Mittino. Motauto had hopped Volvo would approve the project for a limited edition model but the Italian attempt to inject some excitement into Volvo’s range was resisted by the Swedes, and the GTZ remained a one-off.
