Diamondback and Jesse had told him to watch you. Right.
You had witnessed it before, quick to latch onto the group formation when you were first turned by the clan. Jesse and company had allowed you to huddle into a booth, embarrassed as Severen and Caleb – sometimes Mae and Homer would join in, too – would cause hell and open the door to turn a casual night at another dive bar into a feed.
It was a knowledge a similar situation was about to unfold, Sev holding the door open for you with a smirk as you meandered in. You tried to remain casual, eyes facing frontwards as you felt his presence behind you, and the demeaning voice crow over your tense form.
“Waterin’ hole looks fresh, don’t it?”
Feigning laughter, you walked forward and avoided the eyes shifting over to the both of you. He followed closely, and whispered with a friendly smile against your ear, “We’re datin’ as far as they’re concerned. Jus’ follow my lead, and don't mess me up. We'll be eatin' good by the end of the night."
Your fake smile faltered, but still you murmured back, “Yes, sir. Mr. Severen, sir.”
“No. No ‘sir’.” He quickly chided, tugging your belt loop in a warning as the two of you sat at the bar together.
You took a shot. He did a bad Andrew Dice impression. Someone stood up, and he made a comment about their fly being down. Another half-shot. The blood wasn't doing anything, the high wasn't going anywhere. You couldn't tell if you were feeling sick more from the social fear of being sniffed out, or the fact the stuff was merely poison without a purpose.
He made a joke about someone's mama. You smiled out of pure nerves that it was escalating fast. A man yelled at the two of you to "take it outside". The bottle in Severen's hand hit someone's temple. You carefully reached over the bar and took the liquor for yourself since the barkeep wasn't looking. Loud noises got you to stand from your seat, letting the stool topple over from a boot kicking under it in a struggle.
The lights were out, and you felt the hot fingers of someone grab your shirt collar. Your disassociation was cut short, and being bothered that you had to return to this life you had fallen into took form in your knee connecting with the assailant's stomach.
Despite the larger size of the person trying to throw you, your teeth primed themselves as you lunged with your mouth. It was a cheap shot, one no man would expect from someone of your stature and what they understood about personhood. We solved problems with our fists, our guns, our shivs -- not our animal need to bite.
But you weren't exactly a person any more, now were you? The attack was like a dog to a pig, the tender skin of the person's collarbone tasting of aftershave and his hand tangled in your hair. "Agh! Crazy bitch just took a bite outta me-!"
You were held back like a vicious animal by your hair, but your hands now clawed at his face, finding the open spots on his cheeks and under his eyes. It was a shortlived struggle because both your fingers and your teeth had broke the skin, and with another terrified howl the man was on the ground. You straddled with an almost adrenaline-based need to tear, to keep ripping until you had the blood pooling on the surface, under your cold hands.
Severen was in your ear, making you fall short.
“Lemme take some, pup. See, I'm takin' over now. Far more messy than I was anticipatin'." The room was coming back into earshot, your eyes wide as you smelled nothing but the hot blood, and the disdain of your form made you flinch. Your arms curled to your chest, protecting something that wasn't there any more: its mere shadow lingered as your "boyfriend" repeated himself.
"I said let me-“
“TAKE IT, TAKE IT-!” You then screamed, eyes blowing open, “FUCKING - !? Take him, Severen!” Your vicious demeanor died as his smile turned to a grimace, still gritting his teeth with upturned lips. Severen grabbed the man by the shirt collar, hauling him away from you. The blood sprayed along your shirt, making you gasp for air to have the weight taken out from under you, kneeled against the hardwood and aware of someone in the dark bar room baying for rescue.
You stared at the ceiling as calamity happened towards your feet, catching your breath and now regulating your breathing. One thing you still did, one piece of personhood you still had. You didn’t have to normalize anything else, no blood rushing anywhere. That was a numbing feeling that made you fall limp to the earth. It would never flow again, you concurred once more with a lump settling in your throat.
There was a long beat of scuffling, screaming, then silence. Severen had begun hovering over you, but you didn’t recognize it or him until he slapped your face gently.
“[Y/N]… Come on, wild child. Come back now.” You curled your upper lip at the petname, and he beamed, “There she is, knew you’d hate that. Now, come on-“ He pulled you to sit, and you met him in the middle by scrambling to stand. He eased you, “What’s your hurry? Take it slow before you crack your head up on the floor.”
You mumbled, half-slurred and half asleep, “I-I can’t…I can’t slow you down.”
“Y’ain’t, now take it easy.” You grabbed him, realizing the drunk blood was rushing to your head as you declared, “I refuse to slow you down, Severen. If I need to die, let me fucking-”
“Hey, hey.” He went from a crouch to sitting next to you, “You ain’t dying, alright? Get the stick out of your ass.” You stared hard at him, peering into what you could see when making a rare bout of eye contact, “Yeah? Yeah?” You were desperate, needing someone to tell you it was steady, it was okay.
He put a hand on your hip, and hushed you, “Yeah, yeah. Shh, don’t get so shaken up over a drunk son of a bitch. See him?” He turned your head, looking along with you at the corpse at your feet. “You did that, I only helped. …Shit, can tell you’ve done this all before, right?” He nodded, and you merely followed, looking away when you realized you were mirroring him. Trying to shake your head on your own accord, you murmured the two words again, “Yeah, yeah…”
“Sure you did, gave me one hell of a head start.”
You hesitated, seeing the fresh blood rushed as a delicious sensation to your nose. You instead opted to fall back on your knees, Severen only holding on before you yanked yourself from his grip. He merely watched as you started to crawl on your hands and knees, an animalistic bound to the body and latch on the neck.
In a rare bout of silence from the man, he watched you for a moment. Severen then mumbled with a hand rubbing his jaw, “Save some for me, don’t wanna starve when I did half the work.”
You immediately pulled off, and demanded harshly, “Shit, then bite the bastard, boy.”
He laughed and came up next to you to follow in your tracks, leaning in for a drink.
“Aw, gross, got stray hairs on ‘is neck…” He complained with his mouth full, but you just sat on your knees, watching in half-awe and half-dazed comedown.
“He’s drunk…” You mumbled, wiping your mouth with your sleeve, “…Bourbon.”
“Golly.” He beamed at you, “That’s one good talent of yours. Bite the other one over there.” He pointed, “Looks like a margarita sipper if I've ever seen one.”
Lips twitched, but you followed in the same feral frenzy. It was easy to egg you on in such a palpable moment.
Walking back to the hotel room, he had his arm slung around you again. You took his cheeky praise with stained lips, tired eyes as you realized that drinking blood with the alcohol already in it was infact the way to go if you were ever to get drunk again. A theory you already had proven once more.
Did everything about being a monster have to come with a weird loophole now? You didn't know, baring your fangs like a playful canine when Sev stuck a finger past your lips.
"Got somethin' on your teeth, pup, lemme-"
"Fuck outta my mouth, sir."
"Knock off with the sir!" He smiled almost teeth to teeth with you, taking your chin in his hand and shaking your face back and forth as he giggled, "I'on't wanna hear no more sir outta those lips, ya hear me?"
You blew air at him, which he took as affirmative. "Good [man/girl]." Tapping your chin, you shook out of his hold, still under the wrap of his leather arm and letting his other hand dangle over your chest slightly. You had seen him do that to others, and tried to convince yourself you weren't special despite the lingering hope.
Was that hope you just felt? Fucking gross.
You sat on the hotel bed after returning to the dark, the shelter of obscurity, stretching your legs out horizontally along the mattress. Disregarding a building self-conscious recognition on how silly you were about to look, you powered through to arch over the side of the mattress. [The ends of your long hair/a long-chained necklace slipping around your neck with the tilt] brushed the carpet below you, and you closed your eyes for some much needed rest despite a throb still present.
You glared at him as his boot nudged your temple, making your head swing like a pendulum.
“What?”
“Just because vamps’re all rooted in bats don’t mean you gotta sleep like one, stupid.” Severen teased, and you explained, “It helps blood move to my head. You know, since it ain’t doing that anymore. Drives me nuts while I’m adjusting, all that.” You crossed your arms and insisted, “So why don’t you fuck off and let me sleep?”
“No.” He pounced knee first on the bed, suddenly arching his back alongside yours in a bend. “Lemme try. I’on’t believe you.”
"Never tried in all your years?" You asked as his back curved over the side of the bed with you now, and he muttered, "Don't really use beds to sleep. I'd rather bone."
"Sure."
"The hell I do!" His yelling in your ear made you flinch, sneering now as you reached a hand over. “Just-” You settled your hand on his chest, “Calm down, and hang out with me without screaming, Sev.” You added as you recrossed your arms, “Get into comfier clothes, too. Sleeping in jeans ain’t the way to go.”
“Oh, [mister man/miss priss] here gonna tell me…” He trailed off with a snort, and you heard Caleb pipe up from the other side of the otherwise silent room, “Listen to her, Severen, and shut the hell up. Good god."
“Do we gotta share with these guys?” Severen asked, and you asked in reply, “Take the bathtub with Homer if you don’t want the best we got.”
“Not a chance.” He grumbled, and you nearly fell from the bed when you suddenly sensed the cold skin of his hand go up your wrist, take its time finding your palm before settling a hand into your own, twining your fingers just gently enough to leave them resting comfortably.
You could tell he was smiling at the way your expression faltered, blood rushing to the head for a reason other than gravity.
