What are the most common causes of infertility - Dr. Shubhra Goyal
Even after one year of unprotected sexual activity, the inability to conceive and give birth to a child is commonly referred to as sub-fertility or infertility. About 10-15% of couples struggle to conceive and require medical assistance. Infertility is the result of male, female, or a combination of male and female factors in one third of these couples.
Understanding the fundamental mechanisms of fertility is crucial to understanding the problems that lead to infertility. The synchronisation of several complex endocrine systems required for pregnancy occurs throughout human reproduction.
These are the steps in this process:
1. Each month, one of a woman's ovaries must release an egg for fertilisation (ovulation).
2. In order to reach the uterus, the egg must travel through a fallopian tube (womb).
3. Along the journey, a man's sperm must unite with (fertilise) the egg.
4.The fertilised egg then gets implanted inside of the uterus.
If any of these steps are problematic, infertility may result. Infertility can result from problems with the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, sperm, or hormones.
