Dehlavi as director shows an incredible natural ability to create painterly tableaux and knows exactly how to use the stunning #vistas‚ where to place his actors‚ how to create stunning composition. on the writing side this is a little less polished; the overall plot #is decent mystical horror‚ but the script does suffer from some awkward exposition and some unnatural dialogue‚ particularly that between #Firth and Crowley (both superb here). faring better is Kalipha‚ one of the great unsung character actors of his generation‚ as a mysterious #muezzin who acts as a sort of guide to Firth's christian abroad but whose allegiance is open to interpretation. special mention to Shaban #too‚ who delivers a spellbinding and moving performance without a single line of dialogue. a deeply fascinating work if not entirely #successful; quite why it seems to be such an underseen and neglected part of the brit horror pantheon i don't know‚ because there's few #films of that type and era to rival it for pure originality and sheer visual sumptuousness.

In the 12 episodes of the BBC's 1964 The Count of Monte Cristo, there are 26 actors who also appeared in Doctor Who.

Prominent among them are the actors playing the three main villains – Michael Gough as Villefort, Philip Madoc as Morcerf, and Morris Perry as Danglars – who all went on to play villains in Who as well.

On the other side, the Count's two assistants, Bertuccio and Ali, are played by Cyril Shaps and Roy Stewart, who both went on to play sympathetic supporting characters in Who, including playing colleagues again in "Tomb of the Cybermen". (There are apparently times when Stewart got to play something other than the strong silent type, but the BBC in the 1960s was not one of those times.)

And a fun detail from among the smaller roles: When Michael Gough as Villefort gains an audience with the King of France, the King is played by Peter Stephens, who appeared in Doctor Who a few years later as one of the minions of Michael Gough's Celestial Toymaker.

Sweeney! (1977)

For all that it's still quite a lot of fun and very recognisably The Sweeney; perhaps the most successful translation from small #Screen to big of any of the 70s ITV properties. The cast is a dream; an enviable who's who of Brit acting talent which suggests there must #Been more allure to this than just money (Euston films had money but they didn't have money money): perhaps it was just good fun? I mean #I can't imagine Colin Welland (already an award winning and respected screenwriter at this point) was so strapped for cash that he HAD to #Do this film and get splattered by a stray parcel bomb; I'm guessing he was in it for the laughs. Like much of the supporting cast he also #Did an episode of the TV show; and a lot of the more familiar background faces from the series can be spotted milling about in the police #Station scenes. Garfield Morgan however is very notable by his absence; he'd have a reduced role when the series returned in 78 too

Special Branch: Smokescreen (1.2, Thames, 1969)

"Sir, I am entirely in your hands. I would only draw your attention to the fact that this officer went on what appears to have been a completely irregular visit to the dead man, without any form of verbal or written authority from any of his superiors; that he saw him in private, having first ordered one of his colleagues to stay outside the room; and that he now refuses to state what was said."

This is the show hitting its #Stride; all manipulation and coercion and shades of grey. Morris Perry is magnificent: Moxon is a real bastard but he's only just beginning #To show it here. Everyone else is good although Jen Wilson is missed. But it's Paul Darrow who naturally upstages everybody in a small role #As quite simply the smarmiest and most reptilian lawyer in all of 60s tvdom. Presumably he is one of Moxon's little friends #Regardless he is the highlight of an already strong episode.#Elsewhere we have an entirely gratuitous scene of Nesbitt getting dressed in which he comes perilously close to revealing little derren #Still anythings better than the kipper ties right?

Special Branch: Visitor From Moscow (1.13, Thames, 1969)

"I'm only asking you to work together, you know, you don't have to fall in love with the man."

The last couple have been very #Strong and it continues here. Helped along of course by one of my very favourites in Alan Browning. He and Jordan have a lovely #Rapport as opposite numbers from East and West. The plot itself concerns visiting dignitaries and a potential revenge act from intense #Hippy type Shepherd. It all gets a bit muddled and confusing at the end and never really seems to go anywhere but the journey up to that #Point is a lot of fun. DC Morrissey seems to have been relegated to more of a background character and whilst I've been waiting for a #Glimpse of Jen Wilson returning we're at the penultimate episode and no sign of her so i must sadly conclude that she left with Eden #Perhaps she has gone to the home office too. Maybe become secretary to Minister John Barron. Or left this kind of work entirely to go into #Road haulage somewhere..
