A couple days ago I listened to TLC's Crazysexycool for morning setup, and it was delightful, and I was bopping while bleaching the kitchen. And then I got to their version of "If I Was Your Girlfriend," which is the shortlist of my favorite Prince songs, and I started thinking: Is this gayer than the original? There is no way this is being sung to a dude, right?
Today I followed up by listening to Sign of the Times all the way through, also an excellent decision.
Anyway: I will always love the intimacy and yearning of this song, and how it captures wanting to be in someone else's presence all the time, and how there's not always a clear distinction between friendship and romance.
