Ruru | Morepork (Ninox novaeseelandiae)

A small native owl with a distinctive call. In Māori tradition, the ruru was a watchful guardian that belonged to the spirit world. Although its usual ruru/more-pork call was thought to be a good sign, its high-pitched, piercing yelp call was thought to be an ominous forewarning of bad news or events (source: Department of Conservation | Te Papa Atawhai)
