1. What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character?

in 2021 for halloween i painted a character on a wooden pumpkin based heavily on this goosebumps book cover:

… and the concept of mad science in general, inspired by imagery in the song Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett (i was working in the lab late one night, etc) and She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby. here is my painting based on these concepts:

if you’re familiar with my ocs you might recognize Dr. Fresco in his first iteration, same with Teeth. this kickstarted my interest in mad science, with things like classic horror novels inspiring me further. then i listened to the Machine by Lemon Demon and all hell broke loose. i immediately was inspired to make a concept for a young, red-headed, glasses-wearing nerd mad scientist who liked building machines. i made an illustration of the song for a design class, here’s that:

this was the design based on this concept, but this design was much after i had created fritz, and shortly after, gordon. gordon’s concept is based on frankenstein’s monster. i also kind of just wanted to write about a queer couple and thought it would be fun to give fritz a frankenstein boyfriend. here are some early pics lol:

4. And reverse, which one of the four things [the character's name, appearance, personality or their role in the story] did you struggle with the most?

appearance came first for all 3, then names, then personalities, then roles in the story. i struggle most building the environment for my characters and their role inside of it. names i decide on really fast. appearances can change over time with my own interests and life. i guess the personalities are also a slow-going process. lol :P

7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?

Gordon:

his gay little muppet face and gauges

Fritz:

his dyed red hair and his iconic big round glasses that hide big doe eyes. and his dead wife alien robot swag

Fresco:

everything about him… this ^ is how he would draw himself. also he’s so easy to draw bc his design is goofy. love this guys appearance.
