Outback QLD, 2015 website / tumblr / flickr / blog
In summer 2015 I heard of a town called Moranbah in outback Queensland, apparently overrun with deer. The story goes that many years ago a local venison farm had failed and before abandoning the site the owner, faced with a decision, simply set his herd free. Somehow the animals thrived and multiplied in the bleak bush wilderness. As food becomes scarce each dry season, hundreds of deer encroach the watered gardens and cricket ovals of the small town. Two weeks after hearing this story I was driving a hirecar into the Queensland desert. I wandered Moranbah for 6 hours at night and found just one small herd led by a giant stag. I stumbled with my camera and startled them away. In the morning I gave up on the deer and decided to head further inland. This, currently my most ill-advised solo road trip, lasted for just five days. I struggled to expose photos in unforgiving sunlight and burning 40°C heat. I burned the skin from my fingertips changing a tire on the Hyundai after I left the jack in the sun for a few minutes. This was an increasingly strange journey that gave me numerous jarring encounters with lost souls, and I was very glad to get home.
