Abraham Lincoln said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Preparation and practice defines us. The greatest of tenets I have learned is how we do little things, is how we are going to do big things. The Devil, as they say, is in the details. I embrace the details and I repackaged it into Haiku Drills. In order to fully understand Haiku Drills I have to define what they are, where they came from, and why I do them. Haiku drills are individual “practice” time. Time to sharpen. It comes from the Japanese form of poetry that utilizes the 5-7-5 form. I translate that structure onto the reps of a particular movement in the gym. I start each day with Haikus. It is a self-guided block of time in which you choose where you want to focus your preparation and practice. It may be the pull and hip thrust of a snatch, stepping up to the bar for a deadlift, or working through your bite on a climbing rope. All slow, for form. All detail work. The reason to practice Haiku Drills is you are the master of your destiny. I have found, that your preparation and practice aren’t always the things we pay close attention to. A reason I enjoy traditional Japanese Haiku, is what it requires of me. There is more story in the words that aren’t written, than in the words that are. As much as the writer had to strip away to achieve minimalism, the reader has to build, to make it complete. In the gym and in life, there is only so much work that we can do from the outside. Equally important work, comes from within. The Haiku time is time to prepare, to practice, to refine. It is a block of “unstructured” structure time. Haiku drills drive to the essence of efficiency; all wasted movement cut, all wasted effort gone. It is violent minimalism. It is where you get the benefit of knowing what right feels like, and how to get there again. It is the defining characteristic of the professional. It is where you, become you. So spend time sharpening your axes because you don’t get to pick your trees. Will you join me in my pursuit for continuous flow-state? We’ll see you on the drop zone! de CB55, out. #MakeArtilleryGreatAgain #aatw #MoonsOut (at Fort Bragg, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKDIaUlsGGq/?igshid=cl9q767kv8jx
