Finished the basic concept for my sona's look and fit and wanted to ramble a little about the design choices because clothing is a huge means of my self expression.
With fashion as a main creative outlet and as an extension of identity, even after falling into the Sengoku period, that part of them doesn’t disappear. Instead, they adapt. So as a modern day nonbinary fashionista suddenly existing in feudal Japan, naturally their approach to the kimono is unconventional to the era.
They mix silhouettes, layer differently, wear the chest open, and combine elements associated with both men's and women's styling— like pairing a women's kimono with a men's thinner and lower set obi. They simply continue expressing themselves the only way they know how.
Their later designs especially is heavily symbolic too. Spider lilies, seigaiha waves, cloud motifs— all layered together to reflect themes of death, rebirth, liminal spirit, and being someone caught between worlds. I might still tweak placement and sizing of the elements of the kimono but the concept isn't changing.

The mythos/lore around spider lilies in Japan go incredibly well with my lore and so I leaned into its themes.
They are a contrast to Sesshōmaru. To him, their style is strange, scandalous by human standards, clearly not of his era… and yet unmistakably them. And something about how unapologetically themselves they are he respects. He learns to appreciate the strength needed to walk this path even though it doesn't involve a sword. It's why in their long term relationship he indulges them. (He ties the complicated flower knot of their obi cord for them, uses his lordy influence to commission custom pieces for their 'whimsical ideas'.)
I am hella late for this, so much so I thought about giving up. I had other obligations and my muse to draw slipped a bit, but I have decided to keep on pressing!

I have had a lot of fun so far and I am greatly pleased with myself. I wish I could put as much effort into all the prompts as I did for the first two, but I was quickly humbled by the one drawing a day time frame. I have so many ideas for little animations and longer comics based off these.
I am also enjoying drawing Sesshōmaru this much, it gives me time to really figure out how I want to stylize his features. I want it to become second nature and perhaps at the end of YuMay, just that will have happened.
I try really hard to make him look Japanese, and showcase his asian features of a monolid, a profile that isn't overly pointed/sharp etc. I'm mixed myself black/white and have pretty 50/50 blend of features myself. Curly hair, tan skin, creased eyelids etc.
