SENSOREE GER: Mood Sweater,
Just one way in which fashion is trying to incorporate emotions more literally into our fabric self expressions.
The Mood Sweater acts like a mood ring, giving a new way of understanding ourselves and our emotions better and a new way of communicating through our clothing choices.
Feeling Moody?
Reality-Shifting Comments:
Have you ever felt the need to hide your emotions? Perhaps you were angry at your boss but you put on a smile to hide it. Or maybe you’ve been upset about something that you just didn’t feel like talking about so you hid your emotions from your peers. Up until recently it has been fairly easy to hide emotions from those around you (so long as you have a believable fake smile). However, a new development in wearable technology may challenge your ability to keep those secret feelings hidden. According to the article, “A sweater that can guage your mood”, researchers have developed a sweater that has the ability to read the wearer’s emotions. The user must wear two sensors, one on each hand, which relay messages to the sweater about the emotional state of the individual which causes LED lights to change colour depending on the individual’s mood.
Kristin Neidlinger, the founder of the company that created the sweater, Sensoree, claims that the technology has the potential to improve interpersonal communication. Of course the technology will improve the communication of the true feelings of individuals, however, it is debatable as to whether or not the sweater would improve communication as a whole. In fact, the sweater could actually pose more of a risk for increased conflict as opposed to helping the communication process. This is because sometimes there is a good reason for hiding one’s emotions. For example, if an individual is talking to their boss and they become angry about something while wearing the sweater, their boss will see that they are angry which could create a conflict. In this case, the sweater does not truly aid in communication. So while the mood sweater is an interesting development, it probably isn’t the best item of clothing to add to your everyday wardrobe.
