Native to the Indo-Pacific, from Malaysia and southern Japan, through Indonesia and Samoa to the warmer coastlines of Australia. Found in estuaries, algae-clad rocky coasts, muddy and silty seabeds seagrass meadows and reefs, both on and offshore, to depths of about 50 m.
Monacanthus, also the name for the family, means One Horn. The common name comes from the tough skin and the large unfolding fin under the belly.
