In December 2023, my family and I embarked on a cruise around the south island of New Zealand. We celebrated both Christmas and New Year's Eve aboad the Royal Carribean ship 'Ovation of the Seas'.
Our third port of call was Christchurch. A lovely city, we went on a double-decker bus tour, including stops at Cashmere Hill Lookout, Mona Vale Garden Park and the City Centre.

Big Wednesday at Mona Vale by Sacha Fernandez Via Flickr: A deep low off coastal NSW produced monstrous seas and so I took the opportunity to head out to Mona Vale to check out the ocean pool. Usually in calmer conditions, one can walk out to the pool and shoot on the pool's edge, not on this day. Pounding waves and angry skies!

London based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Jamie Hoddle blew our minds (and ears) when he arrived last year as Mona Vale with his debut release, Not Given Up, which gained widespread support across major press outlets, blogs, and playlisters, as well as from BBC Radio 1 bigwigs like Pete Tong and Danny Howard. We already know to expect the exceptional when a new Mona Vale song surfaces. Too Late is his first single from a new string of releases scheduled to arrive in the coming months. The fine shuffling, poignant brooding guitar led alt electronic track was written about the constant battle young people have to stay true to themselves while establishing a career in the music industry, and the hardship of not getting sucked up into the culture it entices. This meta exploration of the very scene Mona Vale has so effectively broken into with his beautifully haunting music walks blooms entrancingly with a natural blend of indie electro sonics and organic instrumentation. Mona Vale counts Maribou State and Four Tet as major influences in his songwriting sojourn, but he’s already etched out his own unique zone of moody thrumming, ambient mesmeric intoxication.
