Soen
Sep 22, 2023 - Kesselhaus (Berlin)
I will never understand some concert promotors in Germany. The show start times are so random, it just happens all too often that the opening act (especially if there are more of them) would start way before the time stated on a ticket or any event details found online.
Such was the case with this show.
We came to Kesselhaus at 8 pm, only to see the first band already packed away from the stage and the second one, Molybaron, preparing to start. Oh well, time for beer/merch.
Molybaron was decent, with really nice song structures and interesting vocals, albeit with a thick Irish accent coming through. 😅 They’ve put on a nice show with songs like Set Alight or Breakdown, but the crowd was super bad and not moving or reacting to the band at all. (Dear German crowd, if someone on the stage raises their hands into the air, then you do that too! Show some goddamn courtesy to musicians.)
I'm regretting not taking their CD home.
Thankfully, things lightened up a lot once Soen came on stage. They were super energetic from the very first moment, I don’t remember them being like this before. Joel rocked some Halford-style outfit for the first part of the show, I also haven’t seen him doing that before. Quite the change in stage presence for these guys, and a nicer production, it seems—complete with fog machines. One thing stayed constant though: Martin’s drumkit on the left.
Soen opened with Sincere, from their latest album, Memorial (is it a memorial to Imperial really? They kind of sound very similar to me at times). Shortly after, there was Savia, Modesty, Deceiver, Monarch, Lascivious… Savia bass intro, man! All the great ones, nicely flowing together, led by Joel and Cody jumping around the stage and very theatrically positioning themselves between the two fog machines every now and then. Did Joel always sing through the nose like this though? I did not notice it until now.
They closed with Lunacy and Violence. I was hoping for something different but not sure what. In general, the show was awesome, and probably my favorite of theirs so far. Until next time!
Rating: 10/10, great show
P.S. Why do I still live in Berlin?
