I’d known he could get a bit hot-headed, but it had always been with the guys...never me. Then, it started to be me. And I stayed. I got pregnant. I had you. He seemed to calm down a bit, with you around...but then, when you were about two, he started to get aggressive with you. I doubt you remember it, but he would yell at you, push you out of the way...then, one day he hit you.  Molly: Daddy hit me? Emmy: Yes, Sweetheart. So...I left right then and there, took you to stay at Mary-Ann’s...and then came back to the house by myself. Molly: Why? Emmy: On the day you were born, I promised myself that I would never let anyone hurt you. So...I made good on that promise. Molly: ...Mom? What did you do? Emmy: Your father and I got into an argument. He’d managed to pack away a bottle of whiskey in the time I’d been gone...He took a swing at me...so I...I picked up the closest thing to me...a poker...and hit him. I hit him, Sweetheart. More than once.  Molly: You killed him? Emmy: Yes...he’s...he’s buried in the back garden...I couldn’t move him anywhere else. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have lied to you...but I didn’t want you having that burden. Not being so young. I didn’t want you growin’ up knowin’ how much of a monster your father was...and your mother is. Tried to do the best for you.  Molly: Well, you’ve done a bang-up job, haven’t you? Just let me do this. I’ll be perfectly safe. Just get a grip, okay. It’s not a big deal. Emmy: Now you listen here, young lady, I did not work three jobs so that you could go and get yourself arrested. I have given you food from my plate, and when your Daddy got rough with you I stepped in- Molly: Wait, what? NEXT / PREVIOUS
