mollyannfoster:
Molly was seated at the kitchen table, face and eyes red, her shoulders slumped and a tissue clutched to her nose and mouth.
"I did." She said finally, her voice thick. Her throat felt as though it might close up and choke the very air from her. It might have been a relief if it did.
"Will- I- I had a patient, I was doing my job and I fucked up and-” She shuddered, letting out another wet sob. “I watched the life drain out of her. Oh God, I can’t even look at Willy.” It felt as though she had been stabbed in the chest. Her entire torso hurt.
A breath escaped from his tightly-sealed lips, letting out an ounce of tension that he held furled up in his body.
He moved a chair over to Molly, sliding the wooden legs across the kitchen floor with a small squeak. He sat down, facing her directly. At least it wasn’t her fault. It was an accident. Nothing truly harmful. Manslaughter, not murder. Maybe not even that — maybe just malpractice; something understandable in her field.
Will put a hand on her shoulder, a soft anchor to reality. Speaking caringly and with as much control as he could find within his panicked mind, he responded:
“Molly, Molly, it’s okay.” His words were becoming choking, giving way to fear. But he remained by her side, his hand unwavering on her shoulder. He wouldn't leave her
"Tell me what happened." ( It can’t be your fault. )
"I killed someone."
His whole body tightened when he heard the words Molly said. It was like a switch had been turned in his mind, changing his demeanour and fixating a shocked intensity on what she had spoken. He gave a silent glance with a furrowed brow as he tried to make sense of what he heard.
It must have been an accident. She was driving and hit another car… probably happened years ago. Or maybe she’s just in denial for something else. Did her mom die? Her sister? Is he blaming their death on herself?
Silent moments ticked by painfully — yet quickly — before he spoke.
“---- What?” He rasped, trying to gather himself. “You couldn’t have.”
He clung to denial because he knew what it meant — If Molly could kill, everyone was a monster. And he couldn’t live in that world. He felt himself dangling on the edge of certainties, hoping that hope would be able to find him even in the darkest of times.
