Technology is forever changing and I think we need to adapt and use it to the best advantage. I do think printed books are still needed and important in today’s society. However, I can see the advantages of the virtual library, ebooks, and other digital resources. For example: the other day I caught an episode of the children’s animated program ‘Arthur’ the episode titled ‘Get Smart’ was about the introduction of a smart board in the classroom. After learning how to use the board, the teacher marvelled at the technology and what it could bring to his classes. The teacher was teaching a lesson on local history and the smart board interrupted him, stating the information the teacher was stating was not correct and displayed evidence of this (found from the internet) on the board. One of the students decided to prove that the teacher was right and after a fruitless search on the internet he headed to the local library. The library had plenty of old documents about the history of the town and the student was able to prove that the teacher was correct. The readings for this module made me think of that episode as even though the internet is a great source of information, there is always the uncertainty of the validity of the information. However, libraries do need to adapt to the technology changes, but I think a balance is needed rather than going from one end a virtual library to a library with no digital resources whatsoever.Â
