Author’s note: I wrote this to purge the demons that just shook me to my core when reading another author’s drabble. This is me purging the emotions that where invoked. I hope my little add-on makes the other story easier for others to read. @wolfsan11 Here is my drabble.
On to the story.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Shiro wakes up gasping for breath. His heart thunders in his chest. He blinks the sleep from his eyes. Grabbing his glasses, he puts them on to peer at his phone for the time. It is three am, the true witching hour. He groans still working on shaking the night mare from his body and mind. He turns on his bed side light. He picks up his phone again. Scrolls to his boyfriend’s name.
Black wanders over to her newly awakened master. She jumps onto the bed and head butts his hand to remind him he is not alone. He rubs her head. “I’m going to have to call Keith, Black. I’m going to have to talk to him about his horror writing and sharing those ideas with me.” Black purrs doing her best to give back Shiro the calm his nightmare stole from him. “Or at least sharing with me his horror story writing damnit. He forgets how these things follow me into my dreams.” He rubs her head some more.
Shiro then hits his boyfriends name. Places the phone to his ear and he waits.
“’Ello? Shiro, what are you awake?” Keith from the sound of his voice is not awake enough to properly form sentences.
“Hello Keith,” Shiro sighs still petting black. “You are not allowed to share your horror novel ideas with me. I had the worst night mare of my life.”
“I’m sorry Shiro,” Keith grumbles, then sighs. Shiro can hear it in his voice Keith is angry with himself. His boyfriend knows how sensitive Shiro is. “I’ll be right over.” He hangs up.
Shiro looks at his phone, then at his cat. Black just keeps purring. “Well Black, cue one guilty boyfriend enroute.”
Shiro rubs her ears. Black purrs. He scoops his black cat up and gets out of his bed. Slipping on his slippers. He snags his phone and takes his cat out to his front room. Shiro’s front room is sparsely decorated. He sits down on his sofa. He turns on his sound system, so he can listen to some classical music while he waits for Keith to arrive.
Twenty minutes later Shiro hears the key he gave his boyfriend turn the lock. He and Black watch as Keith comes in. He brought Kosmo his dog with him. The black wolf mix got along with Shiro’s black cat. Kosmo wandered over to Shiro and stares at Black. Black headbutts and purrs at the larger animal.
Keith comes over to Shiro after relocking the door behind him and taking off his shoes. He comes carrying what looks to be a manuscript. “I want to apologize Love.” Keith makes a face which Shiro knows is directed at himself not at Shiro. “I know what happens each time I talk about my horror novels I write with you. I need to break this pattern.” He looks over at his boyfriend. “Mom told me to branch out my writing.” He smiles sheepishly. “I tried my hand at a supernatural romance. Could you do me the honor of reading it?”
Shiro smiles broadly. “So, you’re going to try and branch out? Only this one?” He takes the offered manuscript from Keith.
“Well,” Keith sits down next to his boyfriend. They watch as their animals get comfortable with each other. “I was thinking paranormal stories, supernatural stories, science fiction, and fantasy stories. All of which may or may not have romantic subtext.” He grins. “I have an idea for a fantasy science fiction story.”
“Oh,” Shiro asks. “What is is going to be about?”
“I was thinking five teenagers who were in a military academy end up in space. Help an alien princess save the universe with her five magical robotic lions. These lions form a bigger robot to defend against bigger threats that the lions cannot handle.” Keith smiles broadly. “It should be fun. I have the main plot and like eight mini plots all out lined. All the main cast are going to have story arcs that are intertwined.”
“Sounds fun. What you going to call it Cherry bomb?” Shiro raises his eyebrows at him.
Keith laughs. “Voltron.”
“Sounds awesome. I’ll read this later today. Come to bed with me?” Shiro pouts. “I don’t want to sleep alone I’m fear falling back into that dream.”
“I’m sorry babe.” Keith looks contrite. He pulls Shiro up. The two head back to their shared bed.
“So, when are you going to move in?” Shiro slips into bed and watches Keith undress. “I could handle the knowledge of what you write, if I did not have to sleep alone with it.”
Keith blushes, “Okay, Shiro I guess you win. My guild is officially to great for me to maintain the separate housing thing. Plus, Pidge has been bugging me about giving her my apartment to her. She can afford its rent on her own.”
“Yeah, I get my Cherry bomb to snuggle with at night.” Shiro turns off the bedside lamp. He turns on his side and Keith snuggles up to his back making Shiro feel safe. “Good night beloved.”
“Good night my paladin.” Keith kisses one of the scars on Shiro’s back. “See you in the morning. We should go over to my apartment in the morning and start packing.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Shiro agrees. The two fall asleep. Shiro has no more nightmares. Keith’s very presence always chases them away.
